• Ret. Sgt John Mattingly / 12 Seconds In The Dark, A Police Officer's Firsthand Account of the Breonna Taylor Raid
    2025/03/24

This week John Mattingly and I sit down to discuss "12 Seconds In The Dark", A Police Officers Firsthand Account of the Breonna Taylor Raid. I started off the interview apologizing to John for doing what I think a lot of us do when it comes to incidents that are reported in the media, we believe what we are told. At every turn mainstream media has failed to report the truth and have conveniently replaced it with whatever version supports the us vs them , defund, movement. They run with lies because agency leadership allows them to do so. When lies aren't challenged with the truth, when repeated enough, those lies become facts in the eyes of the public. John Mattingly, his brothers on that warrant, his family in the aftermath have been betrayed. If you don't think I can happen to you, give this podcast a listen, reflect, and commit to being better in all that you do. Thank you John Mattingly, for your courage and commitment to the truth as unpopular as it may be, God Bless.

  • Nick Lavery / Green Beret / Author of Objective Secure / Awesome Human Being
    2025/03/10

This week I was honored to sit down with Nick Lavery. Nick was so gracious with his time, the most humblest of men, he and I had a conversation you absolutely don't want to miss. We didn't get into the events of 2013 that shaped his life. We instead focused on his "why", and the lessons he has learned from a lifetime of never quitting. Come away a better version of yourself for listening to this amazing human being. Even with my limited interaction with Nick, he's inspired me to be a better version of John. Until next week, take care of yourself and each other, God Bless, John

Chief Warrant Officer Two (CW2) Nick Lavery

Nick, born and raised in Massachusetts, is an active-duty member of The United States Army Special Forces. Commonly known as the Green Berets, the Special Forces perform critical missions including direct action, counterinsurgency, foreign internal defense, special reconnaissance, and unconventional warfare.

In 2013, while deployed to Afghanistan, he and his Detachment fell victim to an insider attack ultimately resulting in the loss of his leg. Following a year of surgeries and initial recovery including the use of a prosthetic at Walter Reed National Medical Military Center, he returned to his unit. Refusing a military medical retirement, Nick set his sights on returning to operational status.

In 2015, at the conclusion of a challenging, comprehensive assessment designed to evaluate Nick’s abilities to operate, he returned to his Detachment and was subsequently deployed once again to Afghanistan conducting full spectrum combat operations. Nick is considered the first Special Forces operator to return to combat as an above-the-knee amputee.

Nick is currently serving as a Special Forces Warrant Officer and is widely recognized as an experienced subject matter expert in special operations, intelligence fusion, mission planning and complex problem solving across all operational continuums. He is also the first amputee in military history to complete the Special Forces Warrant Officer Technical and Tactical Certification course, the Special Operations Combatives Program Instructor course, and the Special Forces Combat Diver Qualification course.

Nick’s awards include the Silver Star, three Purple Hearts, two Bronze Stars, Bronze Star with “V” for valor, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, two Meritorious Service Medals, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, two Army Commendation Medals, Army Achievement Medal, the OSS Society Peter Ortiz Award, the Bruce Price Leadership Award, and the Special Operations Command Excalibur Award.

  • Jimmy Ward / Navigating the Storm / Its Different When You're In It
    2025/02/24

This week I sit down with Jimmy Ward. Jimmy is a great guy, current LEO, who's in the middle of it, the storm that is. Jimmy and I discuss accountability, finding courage when the phone doesn't ring, and knowing who you are when the things that you've built your life around start to vanish. Most importantly Jimmy shares with us how he is navigating through the storm. I'm proud of him for sharing and his willingness to embrace the power of hope. The understanding that hope is created by taking action, and taking action creates hope. Simple but often overlooked, especially when you're in the storm. Sit back, reflect and walk away a better version of you for doing so. Thank you Jimmy for being you.

  • Doug Shoemaker - Public Safety Executive - Culture Change Advocate
    2025/01/15

Welcome back to another impactful season of the "Sometimes Heroes Need Help" Podcast. We are starting this year off with an amazing , impactful, dedicated 33 year law enforcement veteran, Doug Shoemaker. Doug has held many high ranking assignments making his way from patrol officer to chief in several jurisdictions. Doug and is currently working in the private sector, bringing his years of experience to industries that serve the law enforcement profession. I had a really great conversation with Doug about leadership, culture, and the role each of us plays in bringing about the change we desire. Sit back and give it a listen and come away a better version of you for doing so!

    More About Doug:
I believe passionately in policing. Those who answer the call to serve are the ones who we look to not just to be the bedrock of policing now, but the ones who will ultimately create a better future for us and for our communities.

I began my career in Jefferson City, Missouri, and spent nearly 27 years serving residents of the state capitol. I spent years developing and prioritizing community partnerships, which ultimately became a pivotal piece of managing the "Journey for Justice," a march held in the wake of the Ferguson protests in 2014. Working closely with the local NAACP chapter, the department and the community began to come together, rather than remain divided to begin to build more meaningful solutions for all.

I served as the Chief of Police in Grand Junction, Colorado for over four and one half years and then served the people of Denton Texas as their chief of police. The women and men I’ve had the good fortune to work with are passionate about policing, much like those in police agencies across the world. I've most recently retired fully from policing, and while I will miss it, I'm proud of what I accomplished during my time on the job.

I have had some incredible opportunities working with the International Association of Chiefs of Police, beginning back in 2007 and through today. I've served on several committees and sections, and in 2018 was elected to serve a two-year term as the Vice Chair of the Public Information Officers Section. I was honored to be elected as the IACP’s 5th Vice President in September of 2021 and during my work as a Vice President I had the opportunity to lead several national and international efforts on culture within policing agencies.

Outside of IACP, I’m also a member of the Texas Police Chiefs Association (TPCA), NAWLEE, IAWP, and NOBLE.

I am very proud to be a founding board member of The Curve, an effort founded and led by renowned author and speaker Simon Sinek. Our work at The Curve aims to change the way we address culture within policing organizations - particularly at the leadership level.

I begin my new journey as a Public Safety Executive with Peregrine in August of 2024, and I can't express how excited I am by the opportunity to be a part of a company that is forward thinking, genuinely values it members and clients, and looks to the future as an incredible opportunity to work with public safety agencies to provide solutions to challenges they face within their communities.
    - I look forward to connecting with like-minded individuals who want better public safety

  • Cyndi Doyle / Hold the Line : The Essential Guide to Protecting your Law Enforcement Relationship
    2024/12/05

What an amazing conversation I had with Cyndi Doyle, as I like to call her the savior of the law enforcement relationship. She comes from experience and shares what she has discovered to give Leo couples the tools to win and live a life of love, gratitude, and intimacy. She's the real deal and we uncovered the reasons why we fail at relationships but more importantly we discussed what we can do to address those issues and get ahead of it. Real world problem solving!!

CYNDI DOYLE, LPC-S, NCC, CDWF, CISM

Cyndi is a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor in Texas and a Nationally Board Certified Counselor (NCC). She is a Certified Daring Way™ Facilitator for the programs created by Dr. Brené Brown including The Daring Way™ and Rising Strong™.

Cyndi embodies the motto Show Up, Be Seen, Live Brave™ by continually stepping outside her zone of comfort. She shifted her life in 2014 when she was faced with the reality of either never trying a single one of her "crazy" ideas from her "Big Idea Fairy" (B.I.F.) or living life a little scared and trying. She now uses fear as an indicator that something is meaningful and worth trying rather than running away. #fearismylovelanguage

In 2020, the American Counseling Association awarded Cyndi the Samuel T Gladding Unsung Heros Award for her work with first responders and in the counseling field and Texas Counseling Association awarded her the Presidential Award for her continual work and support in the counseling field.
