Medical Gaslighting

著者: Jen Hardy
  • サマリー

  • According to the CPTSD Foundation, medical gaslighting is when a medical professional dismisses a person’s health concerns as being the product of their imagination. They may tell the person their symptoms are “in their head” or label them a hypochondriac. Unfortunately, patients that endure medical gaslighting can go months, years, and even decades without the medical care they need. Their symptoms are being brushed off, their sanity is being questioned, their lives are being ruined. This podcast is to empower these patients, give them a voice, and bring recognition to what is being done to the most vulnerable population in our society. We acknowledge that there are fabulous doctors, nurses, and medical providers and the point of this is not to take away anything from those professionals. Unfortunately medical gaslighting has reached epidemic proportions it’s time to reveal the truth and make it stop. Has it happened to you? As the host of the Hardy Mom podcast, I've interviewed too many patients with stories like this, and now it's time to give them their own voice. Sometimes anonymously, sometimes openly. Always honestly. *We acknowledge and respect the fabulous doctors, nurses, and medical providers who care for their patients and treat them well. We do not name providers or facilities here.

    2023/07/20

Doctors questioning the need for cancer care follow up...tongue pain leading to a rare diagnosis...Margo Shoaf's medical journey has been a unique one.

And if there's anything we've learned, it is that a complex medical journey is more likely to lead to medical gaslighting. When a patient's symptoms aren't "normal," and they don't "look sick," sometimes the medical community would rather just tell them to get more exercise or lose weight than dig deeper.

Medical gaslighting, a phenomenon that occurs when healthcare professionals dismiss or invalidate a patient's symptoms or concerns, can have devastating consequences for individuals seeking medical help. In this episode, we delve into the story of Margo Shoaf, who experienced both a painful tongue and the detrimental effects of medical gaslighting.   Join us as we explore Margo's journey to find answers and shed light on the importance of validating patient experiences.
