  • EP2: From Playing Cards to the Steam Engine: How ideas spread, or don't spread
    2024/09/03

This episode sent me all over the place. I had no idea where this one was heading. I didn't really think the emerging theme would be how ideas spread (or don't) but that's what came out!

Learning about how culture spreads kind of surprised me. (gambling seems to spread like wildfire) There's war, industry and a good quite an examination of early Chinese history in this episode. I had a lot of fun learning in this one.

  • EP1: From Timekeeping to Antarctica: The Human Drive for Wonder and Discovery
    2024/08/20

This episode starts with the topic of humans' relationship with time and timekeeping and finishes with a narrative about the race to be the first people to reach the South Pole in Antarctica. There's a good deal in the middle connecting these ideas, and that part was a lot of fun for me to learn. You'll have to listen to understand how they're connected.

What did I learn from writing this episode?

Well, without spoiling anything, I learned about how hindsight frames our world and what we know about it to a large degree. When something works out great, the risks taken seem worth it. But when they don't pan out, it becomes easy to be more critical. A lot of times, the difference between victory and defeat comes down to luck. When doing future research, I will try to hold back on any harsh judgments for failure until I have a complete picture of what actually happened.

I also question the need for us all to move so fast. It's like we're all in a race and don't know what the race is for, where we're going, or what we win. At least, if we're going to go fast, we should be doing something worthwhile.

  • Introducing: Meridians
    2024/08/17

Coming August 20th 2024! Meridians is a show about history, science, and culture. I'm Charlie Noble, and I want to talk about the world.

I love history; I like dorking out about science. I like learning about other people.

Where do they come from? What's their story?

And Why is the Earth spinning?

How did we end up with the customs we have?

    Who was Atilla the Hun?

    Why do batteries work?

The show's format works like this: We start with a given topic and, through connected information, work our way to our final topic. The two topics may or may not be directly related. The fun part is connecting the two and learning about a bunch of new things. I don't want to rehash stuff we've all heard before. We'll get into the nitty gritty and ask some strange questions. And hopefully, we'll learn some things we've never learned before.

If you're chilling at home, driving to work, or doing some chores, Stop in and check out Meridians.

We'll always cover at least 3 topics, whether it be a person, place, or thing, or maybe the starting topic will be an idea or a concept. That's the fun part. I want to make each episode a wild ride or a trip you've never been on before.

The show will initially drop every two weeks on Tuesdays.

Episodes will probably be 1-2 hours in length.

If you're listening to this in 2024, you're on the ground floor of this podcast. I hope you stick around and learn along with me. Let's see where this goes.

Check out meridianspodcast.com for more info. I hope you listen to and enjoy the show. Thank you.
