The song begins with the young woman and her lover meeting on the banks of the Ohio River. The lover promises to take the young woman away and marry her, but he betrays her and murders her instead. The young woman's body is then thrown into the river.

    Today on This Quiet-Please Podcast on Murder Ballads we are going to talk about one of the most famous murder ballads of all time: Stagger Lee/ The song "Stagger Lee" is based on a real-life murder that took place in St. Louis, Missouri, on Christmas Eve, 1895. Stagger Lee Shelton, a pimp and gambler, shot and killed Billy Lyons, a friend of his, after an argument over a Stetson hat. Shelton was arrested and tried for murder, but he was acquitted.
