  • 012, A Very Chatty Mystery, Thriller, Suspense and Crime Novel Book Haul
    2023/06/08
So, way back at the end of April, I decided I wanted to start filming regular mystery and thriller novel book hauls on my YouTube Channel and Podcast every month. My aim was to share them here on this blog because I'm a bit of a bibliophile and a game nerd, as you can see by the wall of bookshelves behind me in the video. A Classic Over-Thinker As you can see from the content on this blog, I failed to follow through with my plans to film a monthly thriller novel book haul. Well, I did the book purchasing and put them in piles according to purchase dates, then I kept putting it off because I'm a classic over-thinker. Instead of buying books and then filming myself talking about why I purchased said books, I over-thought the book haul process. I convinced myself that I needed to talk about why I purchased the book and accurately discuss the synopsis and all of those things. In this particular book haul, I've included books in the mystery, thriller, suspense, and crime genres because I write in and most of the books I read are in these genres. But occasionally, I'll read fantasy or historical fiction. In saying that, many of the books I read, regardless of genre, have elements of crime, thriller, and suspense because it's what I love to read. I like something that’s fast-paced, but I've started purchasing fantasy novels, but that's for a different haul. In this haul, I'm going to keep it strictly to thrillers because I'm a bit of a mystery novel nerd. About This Book Haul The books that I'm about to show you I purchased during the months of May through to August. At the time of this filming, in September, I hadn't purchased any thriller-related books. My September book purchases had been fantasy, but I'll do a separate haul in the middle of the month and be more on top of my book haul game. Spoiler alert, since it’s been a while since the filming of the video and the creation of the blog post, I did manage to buy a couple of thriller novels. What can I say? I couldn’t resist. 2022/11/02

So, things are changing at the Book Nerd Podcast.

    Why?

A few weeks ago, I discovered that another podcast has the exact same name as mine, but they have almost 88 episodes where, whereas I only have nine. So, I decided to do the right thing and change the name of the podcast to The Mystery Novel Nerd from this episode going forward.

So without further ado, let's get on with the episode.

  • 009, My Favourite Mystery and Thriller Novels of 2021
    2022/07/24

In this episode, I'm going to discuss my favourite mystery and thriller novels that I read in 2021. I know what you're thinking, "It's been a while since the end of 2021," but hear me out. I wanted to put a bit of distance between the end of 2021 and my reading because I wanted to discuss the books that stood out to me the most. From memory, I read close to fifty books in 2021. Actually, I've checked, and it was 49 books read.

So without further ado, let's get on with the episode.

  • 008, Agatha Raisin: Books vs TV Series
    2022/07/10

As you can tell from the title of this episode, I'm going to discuss the Agatha Raisin television show on Acorn TV versus the books in order to avoid spoilers; I'm going to focus on how Agatha is portrayed, not the events in the show and novels.  Fingers crossed, I stick to my notes, and this show remains as spoiler free as possible. You get it. I've tried not to ruin things for you, but just be aware I could slip up and start talking plot before we get started.

I should also point out that I've watched season one and two, but not three, because I couldn't purchase it on Amazon Prime Video—it's only available on the Acorn TV streaming service. Actually, this isn't true anymore. I've caught up since I wrote this script, and I'm rewatching season one, but currently, there are seasons one to four available. We have finished watching season four, and Amazon Prime Video recommended the Quiche of Death, again, which is the pilot episode—it's not officially a part of season one. And I thought, "Ooh, maybe I wanna watch that." Then, I got trapped into watching season one again—the things you do as a podcaster. But I'm glad I did this because it refreshed my memory and it's reaffirmed the things that I've said in the script that I still hold to be true. On top of this, I'm also hoping to keep this as a short episode.

So without further ado, let's get into the episode.

  • 007, A Giant Female Amateur Sleuths Book Haul
    2021/10/25

Just like the previous episode, I've been saving the books up in piles on the floor in my office from shopping trips between October 2019 and March 2020, when my physical book-buying ban began. Since then, I've fallen off the bandwagon and "forgot" about my book-buying ban. As the title suggests, all the books in this haul feature female amateur sleuths who are amateurs and are not professional Detectives or police officers. For the sake of clarity, I do not include characters like Eve Dallas from the In Death Series. And I've managed to stop myself from reading these books before I haul them for you.

  • 006, The Book Buying Tag | How I Buy Books
    2021/09/20

As you can tell by the super spoiler-y title of this video, I'll be doing the Book Buying Tag created by Megan Olivier. Even though this is quite an old tag, I loved it so much that I clearly couldn't resist filming it.  After much deliberation, I've decided to share this tag with you over on the podcast. For the sake of transparency, I filmed the original video in April 2020. In light of that, I do make a reference to the lockdown. I've tried to delete as much of this as possible so that you don't find it triggering.

    Here are the questions:

    1. Where do you buy your books?
    2. Do you ever pre-order books, and if so, do you do this in-store or online?
    3. On average, how many books do you buy a month?
    4. Do you use your local library? If so, how my books can you or do you borrow at a time?
    5. What is your opinion on library books?
    6. How do you feel about charity shops or second-hand books?
    7. Do you keep your read and TBR pile together on the same bookshelf or not?
    8. Do you plan to read all of the books that you own?
    9. What do you do with books you own that you feel you will never read or did not enjoy?
    10. Have you ever donated books?
    11. Have you ever been on a book-buying ban?
    12. Do you feel that you buy too many books?

    Thanks for listening!

  • 005, A Giant Crime, Mystery, and Thriller Book Haul
    2021/01/29

Coming up in this episode, I will share with you an embarrassingly long and overdue crime, mystery and thriller book haul. Perhaps on a not-so-surprising note, I have read some of these novels. As always, I will endeavour to be as spoiler free as possible. The crime, mystery, and thriller books in this haul were purchased over the last six months of 2019. Yes, some of these books have been sitting in a pile on the floor in my office for eighteen months.

What can I say? I'm a chronic procrastinator.

Way back in March, I planned on releasing this episode, but my husband started working from home, and I struggled to figure out how to continue to work with my new workspace colleague, so this podcast went on a hiatus. Well, I thought it would be a short hiatus, but it didn't work out like that, much like many other things in 2020. But, back to the books. As per my previous book hauls, I separated the novels according to the genre.

So, without further ado, let’s get into my giant crime, mystery, and thriller book haul.
