Summary

Princess Potentilla, the beautiful daughter of King Cloverleaf and Queen Frivola, is locked away by her mother for fear that someone might fight her more beautiful than the queen. To ensure no one would go looking for the princess they spread rumors that she is a terrifying and hideous monster.

Attracted to the kingdom by one of the queen's parties, Prince Narcissus, a ward of the fairy Melinette, hears the stories and determines to see the beastly princess for himself. Armed with an invisibility ring he goes in search of her, and is shocked to discover the truth. Immediately he falls for the beautiful princess.

Unfortunately, the evil enchanter Grumedan also wishes to marry the princess. And so, they two begin to compete for her hand.

Ultimately, after much foul play, duplicity, and some fairy intervention, Prince Narcissus and Princess Potentilla marry. They live happily and are beloved by all of their subjects.

Summary

Before allowing Princess Sylvia to choose her fairy gift, the flower fairy sends her to visit with princesses she had gifted in the past. After each visit Sylvia reflects and reports on the gifts- beauty, eloquence, pleasing, wit- and concludes that the best gift she can ask for is a gentle spirit.

Summary

Despite their families being enemies for generations, Sylvain and Jocosa fall in love.

The Fairy of the Meadow sees how kind and lovely they are and promises them her favor and protection so long as they clear her favorite fountain every day. They agree, and are good to their word, until one morning when they are distracted by gathering flowers for one another. By the time they reach the fountain it has begun to overflow into a great body of water that separates Sylvain and Jocosa for three years.

Eventually, the fairy takes pity on them and returns them home. She sets them up in a lovely cottage and invites her fairy friends and neighbors to their wedding. While they wait for the guests to arrive she tells them a story.

Sylvain and Jocosa live to a good old age, the whole time loving each other with all their hearts.

Summary

After a man sends each of his two elder sons on a three years' journey and throws them each a splendid feast on their return, his youngest son begs to go too. With little faith in Jenik, his son, the father agrees.

On his journey Jenik rescues a dog, a cat, and a snake from being killed. In appreciation, the snake tells him to ask the serpent king for his enchanted watch which has the power to grant its owner whatever their heart desires. Jenik indeed acquires the watch, and after seeing that it truly works returns home.

His father throws him no feast, so with the help of the watch Jenik throws one for himself. The King attends, and is so impressed by Jenik's apparent wealth and splendor that he immediately wants him for a son-in-law, and so he marries the princess.

In time, Jenik tells his wife about his enchanted watch. Bored by the dull man she was made to marry, she steals the watch and uses its power to make herself a palace in the middle of the sea.

Wanting his watch back, Jenik sets out to retrieve it with the help of his dog and cat.

Back in possession of the watch, he uses it to drown the Princess's palace and returns home to his parents, where he lives happily to the end of his days.

Summary

As soon as the Caliph and Vizier use the magic word all three enchanted birds are returned to their human forms. The Caliph is wonderfully surprised (and relieved) to discover that the Owl is indeed a beautiful princess.

Quickly, they return to Baghdad to take back the city and mete out just punishment. They then live out the rest of their days happily and in good humor.

After hearing their story, the owl shares her own and reveals that there is a group of sorcerers and magicians who occasionally gather at the ruins to discuss their nefarious deeds- but she will only reveal their location if the Caliph or Vizier should promise to marry her. The Caliph agrees and quickly discovers the peddler who sold them the magic scroll among the group of sorcerers and overheard him telling over the magic word: "mutabor!"

Summary

Stuck in their stork forms, the Caliph and Vizier return to Bagdad. There they witness a great parade announcing the new lord of Bagdad, whom the Caliph immediately identifies as Mirza, the son of the magician Kaschnur, his greatest enemy. The Caliph then understands how and why he was tricked.

Determined not to despair, the two storks fly away. Unused to the strain of flying, they stop at a ruin where they discover another enchanted animal, an owl, who asks to hear their story…
