  • Ep 10 Arifa Akbar: Estrangement, Reconciliation & Death
    2022/04/04
Arifa Akbar’s sister Fauzia died in 2016 from tuberculosis. Fauzia experienced night sweats, her lungs hurt, and her face began to swell; despite these signs the doctors at The Royal Free Hospital in London were baffled and she died of a brain haemorrhage. In Arifa’s stunning memoir ‘Consumed’ she investigates how a leading hospital could have missed this ancient but curable disease. Here, Arifa discusses her and Fauzia’s complicated love for one another, from best friends in their teens to years of estrangement. The sisters were pitted against each other and, whilst Arifa was her Father’s favourite, Fauzia had a totally different childhood under the same roof, experiencing emotional cruelty from their Dad. Arifa is brutally honest about the impact that this childhood trauma and Fauzia’s paralysing depression and eating disorder had on them, pulling them apart for years. PAGE 112 looks at how the mistrust had set in but how, ultimately, the sisters were reconciled and all the guilt, rage and pain fell away as Arifa dashed to A&E to be by her sister’s side. This is a deep discussion about the roles parents ascribe to their kids, how families create their own mythologies and how sibling misunderstandings can become so muddy it’s hard to see who started the argument and what it’s even about. --- Abby on Twitter and Instagram - @AbbyHollick Arifa on Twitter - @Arifa_Akbar --- Consumed - https://uk.bookshop.org/books/consumed-in-search-of-my-sister-shortlisted-for-the-costa-biography-award-2021/9781529347555 NHS supportive links for Tuberculosis, Eating disorders and Depression: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/tuberculosis-tb/ https://www.nhs.uk/mental-health/feelings-symptoms-behaviours/behaviours/eating-disorders/overview/ https://www.nhs.uk/mental-health/conditions/depression/ --- Page is hosted and produced by Abby Hollick for Good Tape. • Ep 9 Laura Dockrill: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
    2022/03/28
TW// Discussion of suicidal thoughts, self-harm and postnatal psychosis.// CBT Day! Writer and illustrator Laura Dockrill credits Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for changing her life and helping her recover from postpartum psychosis. Laura's stunning memoir 'What Have I Done?' charts her terrifying experience of delusions, insomnia and depression after the birth of her son. She explains how CBT has taken away a lot of the guilt and shame that comes with being an unwell parent. Through studying CBT, Laura learnt to label thoughts - for example naming them 'intrusive', 'compulsive' or 'irrational' - and this helped her to keep the fear at bay. CBT might not work for everyone but it is utterly inspiring to hear how Laura went from being someone who felt broken to someone who can exist happily alongside her fears. Pagedive into PAGE 319 if you need some rational thinking in your life and more self-compassion. I love Laura for writing this book and for being so open about how CBT, medication, therapy and time saved her. --- Social Media: Abby on Twitter and Instagram - @AbbyHollick Laura on Twitter - @LauraDockrill Laura on Instagram - @lauraleedockrill --- Laura's memoir - https://uk.bookshop.org/books/what-have-i-done-motherhood-mental-illness-me/9781529112542 Zombie Mum - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/zombiemum/id1558579877 NHS supportive links for suicide and self-harm: https://www.nhs.uk/mental-health/feelings-symptoms-behaviours/behaviours/help-for-suicidal-thoughts/ https://www.nhs.uk/mental-health/feelings-symptoms-behaviours/behaviours/self-harm/ Postpartum Psychosis - https://www.nhs.uk/mental-health/conditions/post-partum-psychosis/ Action for Postpartum Psychosis - https://www.app-network.org CBT therapy - https://www.nhs.uk/mental-health/talking-therapies-medicine-treatments/talking-therapies-and-counselling/cognitive-behavioural-therapy-cbt/overview/ Blindboy podcast - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/an-intro-to-cognitive-psychology-pt-1/id1300577518?i=1000419570336 Nanette (Hannah Gadsby) - https://www.netflix.com/gb/title/80233611 Ten Steps to Positive Living - https://uk.bookshop.org/books/ten-steps-to-positive-living/9781529373455 How to Stubbornly Refuse to Make Yourself Miserable: About Anything - Yes, Anything! - https://uk.bookshop.org/books/how-to-stubbornly-refuse-to-make-yourself-miserable-about-anything-yes-anything/9781472142788 Self-Help For Your Nerves - https://uk.bookshop.org/books/self-help-for-your-nerves-learn-to-relax-and-enjoy-life-again-by-overcoming-stress-and-fear/9780722531556 Nigel Slater podcast - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/a-cook-s-chronicles-a-podcast/id1444767211 --- Page is hosted and produced by Abby Hollick for Good Tape. • Ep 8 Oliver Burkeman: The 'Future-Focused' Attitude
    2022/03/21
Do you get anxious about the future? Are you obsessed with your to-do list? Is organising, scheduling, living for next week your thing? Then this is the episode for you. Oliver Burkeman's new book saved me from myself! I had so much fun chatting to him all about the 'future-focused' attitude and the 'when-I-finally' mind. We dissect PAGE 126 of his New York Times bestselling book, 'Four Thousand Weeks: Time and How To Use It'. 4000 weeks is roughly 80 years, which is hopefully how long we've got on the planet. The central question of the book is how do we make these weeks count? We discuss anxiety, tolerating a level of uncertainty and accepting that most things do not go to plan and never go perfectly. Oliver's book taught me to relax, trust myself and give up trying to get all my ducks in a row - things will go wrong, the to-do list will always be never-ending and that's ok. I love this book and appreciate Oliver's tips for staying in the here and now. --- Four Thousand Weeks - https://uk.bookshop.org/books/four-thousand-weeks-the-smash-hit-sunday-times-bestseller-that-will-change-your-life/9781847924018 Cal Newport's book - https://uk.bookshop.org/books/deep-work-rules-for-focused-success-in-a-distracted-world/9780349411903 Bruce Tift psychotherapist – http://www.brucetift.com Laura Vanderkam - https://lauravanderkam.com CS Lewis’ sermon - https://www.cslewis.com/learning-in-war-time/ Insight timer – https://insighttimer.com Ten Percent Happier - https://www.tenpercent.com --- Abby on Twitter and Instagram - @AbbyHollick Oliver on Twitter - @oliverburkeman --- Page is hosted and produced by Abby Hollick for Good Tape.
