In the early days of the colonies, painting was primarily a practical craft, used for decorative purposes or to document important events and individuals. Many of the earliest American painters were self-taught or trained in Europe, and their work often reflected the styles and techniques of their Old World counterparts.One of the first notable American painters was John Singleton Copley, who was born in Boston in 1738. Copley was a self-taught artist who became known for his highly detailed and realistic portraits of colonial society.
