  • 014: Should You Put Your Podcast on YouTube?
    2023/02/20

YouTube is the second most popular search engine in the world, with over 2.1 billion users. As a podcaster, that means TONS of potential for finding new listeners (or watchers) and growing your audience through a video podcast.

Since most of you are recording your podcasts on platforms that also record video (a small upside of the pan-demi is that it has given us more ways and more understanding of how to record remotely) it makes sense when you ask how to grow your podcast, you’ll wonder should you also put your podcast on YouTube?

Being successful on YouTube isn’t as simple as posting just any old thing. In this episode, we’ll discuss the primary questions to consider when deciding whether to put your podcast on YouTube and if you should take the steps to launch a video podcast.

    Topics Covered:

    • Knowing what works and what doesn’t work on YouTube
    • The time commitment required to produce a video podcast
    • What finances are required to produce a high-quality YouTube podcast

  • 013. The Best Podcast Conferences of 2023
    2023/02/12

One of my favorite ways to connect with other podcasters is by attending one of the many podcasting conferences available across the globe. Podcast conferences give creators like you a chance to uplevel your skills, network your way into some guest podcasting opportunities, and meet your fellow podcasters IRL.

2023 is our year to get back to it! With the worst of the pandemic behind us, let’s take this chance to meet up in person. At last! I cannot wait to put a face and a hug to the voice behind some of my favorite shows.

Being a podcaster can be lonely. That’s why we at The Wave are creating LOTS of ways to find community no matter where you are on your podcasting journey, or where you are in the world. From our weekly digital Pomodoro-inspired co-working sessions led by our Community Manager to our free community platform as a place to connect from wherever you have wifi, we have got you covered.

    Topics Covered:

    • The many benefits of attending podcast conferences you might not have thought of
    • My top 15 must-attend podcast conferences happening in 2023
    • An invitation to our online podcasting community — you never know who in our fun and supportive group will also be attending some of these events, too!

  • 012: Not Seeing the Listenership You Want? Try This!
    2023/01/30

Every podcaster — no matter if you’re just starting out or you’ve been releasing episodes for a while — wants more listeners, right? Yeah, I see you.

First of all, remember that like other digital marketing platforms, quality is always, always, better than quantity.

However! Other than the very validating and very delightful ego boost you get when your listenership grows, there are other benefits too. Like the fact that a large audience will help you attract sponsors, approach podcast networks and ultimately attract more listeners by word of mouth. Seeing a podcast with a huge following tells people there is something worth their time at the other end of the follow, subscribe or push of the play button.

But how do you get there before you are — there? How do you build your podcast audience in an ongoing way? We'll discuss the answer in this episode.

    Topics Covered:

    • Engaged listeners can help your show through word of mouth
    • Use the live feature on your favorite social media to connect with your audience
    • Build a community that will allow for a two-way conversation between you and your listeners
    • Don't leave your listeners on read when they reach out in the DMs
    • Bonus: feature listeners on your episodes with shout outs

  • 011: How to Use a Podcast to Build a Personal Brand
    2023/01/24

As a prospective podcaster, you might feel stuck knowing that you don’t have an existing brand or identity to build your show’s concept around. But what if I told you, you could use your podcast to establish a brand for yourself as an expert or personality in your niche? It’s true! Naturally, the next question is how?

There are a ton of ways that podcasting can help with personal branding. Generating original unique content on a regular basis establishes expertise, and using your voice helps people connect to you in a highly personal way.

The average time that people spend listening to an episode is much longer than the time they spend consuming other digital marketing content, such as Instagram posts and blog posts. Let them get to know you and your brand while they run errands or cook dinner. They’re welcoming you into their lives, so make it count and keep them comin’ back for a brand they love and will come to expect.

Podcasts are great tools for helping individuals get to know you and your existing brand. But having a podcast doesn’t guarantee that your brand will solidify and gain traction. If you are using your podcast to build a brand, consider the tips from this episode.

    Topics Covered:

    • Niching down helps you find your biggest fans
    • Visual identity is an important part of brand building
    • Knowing your differentiating factor will help you stand out from the crowd
    • BONUS: Use this competitive analysis and our accompanying video to find your "it" factor

  • 010: How Much Does it REALLY Cost to Start a Podcast?
    2022/10/03

Helping female podcasters start a podcast is something we at The Wave love to do — among all of our other amazing podcast-related skills, thank you very much! One of the most common questions we get asked is, “how much does having a podcast cost?”

Sorry to say it isn’t as simple as giving you an exact figure, however, in this week’s episode, I am going to break down things more clearly into three categories:

    • things you absolutely should spend money on
    • things you don’t need to open your wallet for unless you want to
    • and where to save big.

You will leave with the knowledge required to create an incredible podcast on your own budget. And be sure to stick around to the end of this episode, where I will share an insider offer just for our pod pals that will save you even more money starting your pod.

Understanding the true costs and cost range of starting a podcast can be confusing. With so much information out there and so many people with podcasts ranging from your neighbor Dale recording from his studio apartment all the way to celebrities building a whole other building off the side of their house just for their podcast, it is hard to know just where we sit on that scale.

I know it can be tempting to want to know how to start a podcast for free, but if it were that simple, you wouldn’t be here listening to this episode right now.

    Topics Covered:

    • The challenges of creating a budget for your show
    • The equipment you need to purchase such as an external mic
    • How to save money on cover art and music
    • An optional purchase that may save you a ton of time

  • 009. Daily Habits That Lead to Podcast Growth with Jeremy Enns
    2022/09/26

Are you wanting to grow your podcast listenership and reach, but there is so much conflicting “expert” information out there it feels overwhelming to know what to trust? Are you unsure where to focus your time and energy on how to grow a podcast?

A few weeks ago, we at The Wave had our first community event for 2022. Exciting!

Side note, there are plenty more events coming your way, so make sure to check out the links in the show notes to join our discord community for more information.

Today I am going to summarize the event for you, breaking it down into bite-sized pieces. For those of you who bought tickets to this event, we sent out a replay for you, so check your inbox to get Jeremy’s wisdom all over again. If you didn’t make our event, that’s okay! You can still develop those high-growth habits with Jeremy at his FREE upcoming workshop, so stay tuned for more info on how to access that event!

Jeremy and I agree that podcasting is better than most mediums at some things, such as building trust, having nuanced conversations, and getting really in-depth with people. But there are some things that podcasting isn't great at, like sparking engagement, your discovery, and shareability. Instead, you need to use tools that are built for this alongside the podcast itself. In order to make the most of these other platforms, we have to spend our time on marketing activities that fill in the gaps. There are small things we can do on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis that helps us contribute to those components and help our show be successful.

That’s where Jeremy presents the three C’s:

    • Consumption
    • Creation
    • Connection

Learn all about the three C's and more in this episode.

    Topics Covered:

    • Who is Jeremy Enns
    • How to improve the way you consume marketing by paying attention
    • Implementing zero-click content
    • How to build your network with gratitude

  • 008. The One Thing EVERY Podcaster Should Have
    2022/09/05

There is one thing that I believe can truly be a make or break, and I recommend it to every single one of my clients. Folks, you have to have a website for your podcast. Whether you are using your podcast to promote your existing company or to help you build a new brand — a website is the key to success.

You may already have a website for the company or brand you’re growing, and that’s perfectly fine. You can create a podcast tab within that website and reap the same benefits. And you should! But if you don’t have an existing website, then your show needs its own site. Either way, consider this site your listener’s one-stop shop and a place that you shouldn’t wait for a huge following to create but rather as leverage to help you create that larger listenership.

So why a podcast website over all the other ready-to-go options that I could use for sharing content? Because as you will hear me say many times, podcasts are, unfortunately, hard to discover. The directories used to distribute podcasts, like Apple and Spotify, are not good at helping new listeners find shows, especially indie shows.

There are a number of platforms that are good at helping people find the content they are looking for. You’ve probably heard me talk about them before — they are Pinterest, YouTube, and of course, Google — and in order to be discovered by Google, you need a website. It’s that simple. So how do you create a website that Google likes and shows to prospective listeners in search of a new show? I’ve got all the tips.

    Topics Covered:

    • How a website can help increase your discoverability
    • Where to go when building a website from scratch
    • The trick to organizing your website to maximize search engine optimization

  • 007. The Easiest Way to Monetize Your Podcast with Ads
    2022/08/29

You’ve likely heard ads on podcasts and assume that’s the best way to make money podcasting. You might have also heard them and stopped there as you’re unsure how to monetize a podcast and convinced your reach isn’t big enough to attract advertisers. Heck, even if you have those kinds of numbers, you still might feel stuck. I’m here to un-stick you — providing you with an accessible-to-all-podcast-sizes option you might not be in the know of to help you monetize a podcast through ads.

Podcasting takes a lot of work, and pod babes deserve to make money from their podcasts. Getting advertisers to pay you for reading out ads is generally reserved for shows with tens of thousands of downloads. There is, however, another way to get companies to pay you for promoting their products, and it’s accessible to podcasts of every size. It’s called affiliate marketing.

Who is she? You ask. Is she right for me? Are we going to be good together?

Sit down, relax, let me introduce you. You’re going to get along great.

    Topics Covered:

    • What is affiliate marketing, and why is it great for indie podcasters
    • How to advertise authentically on your show
    • The characteristics you should seek in an advertising partner
    • How to implement an affiliate link or code
    • A bonus tip that will help you get more people to say yes to your ads
