  • Dr Mary Miller - Fierce Compassion
    2024/08/13

    Hello, amazing humans!

We're excited you're joining us for the Revolutionary Circle Podcast. This Podcast is brought to you by Revolutionary Woman Global and co-hosted by four dynamic and trailblazing women - Shuhada Alauddin, Joyce Wong Jin Yi, Karen 'Gem' Pohlman and Morna MacGillivray (Haist).

In this episode we’re delighted to welcome our long-term friend and colleague from Aotearoa, New Zealand Clinical Psychologist and multi-talented Dr Mary Miller.

Mary’s life story and work in the world is extraordinary.

Her soon to be published first book focuses on Fierce Compassion - a leadership quality that we believe is essential for creating workplaces, communities, systems and humans that thrive.

“Embracing Fierce Compassion helps you navigate the complexities of leadership and life with the transformative power of compassion. In a world marked by division, burnout, and uncertainty - Fierce Compassion offers actionable guidance on developing essential skills like self-awareness, empathy, and effective communication.‘

Fierce Compassion first emerged through Dr Mary’s clinical practice working with senior medical professionals and managers. She noted how traits like perfectionism often came with intense self-criticism and poor mental health, even though the rest of the world praised them for what they achieved.

She saw over and over again how practicing a multi-dimensional form of compassion and inner strength (what she now calls Fierce Compassion) allowed leaders to open new doors inside themselves and amplify their contributions within their organization.

In this conversation, Dr Mary shares amazing insights from:

    • Her Journey: Dr Mary shares some of her early experiences including becoming tragically widowed at 21 and how this life changing event became a spark for the evolution of her career in helping others and ultimately learning to become a psychologist.
    • Burnout: In an age where so many of us are are working in systems perfectly designed for burnout and overwork, we learn what we can do when ‘there’s no more room to work harder’.
    • 3 Essential Human Systems: We learn about 3 essential human systems: the Threat, Drive and Soothe systems and how we need all of them to operate effectively as humans and leaders.
    • What is Compassion? Compassion is often misunderstood as being ‘nice and kind’ and the fierceness really comes from the root word of strength, a sense of being able to take a stand in the world.
    • Simple tools to start cultivating Fierce Compassion in your own life and leadership.
