Their doctrine denied that Jesus Christ had come in the flesh, and that denied cut at the very heart of the gospel. They tried to enter homes quietly, using the kindness of God's people as an opportunity to plant error. Confusion is the hallmark of Satan, and these false teachers labored to create confusion wherever they could.

Yet they denied the very heart of the gospel, refusing to confess that Jesus Christ had come in the flesh.

    By the time John wrote this letter, false teachers had begun creeping into the assemblies. They spoke often of love, promised freedom and enlightenment, and appeared spiritual and compassionate. Yet their message stripped love of its true meaning. They reduced it to emotion and promoted a love that excused sin. They dismissed the authority of God's Word and replaced the truth of Scripture with their own imaginations.
