    2024/10/24

Are you familiar with the tired routine of staring at a closet chock-full of clothes with no clue what to wear? It might be time for a closet detox. This week on Room by Room: The Home Organization Science Insights Podcast, host Marie Stella interviews closet organizer Shaniece Jones on how closet therapy and detox transform your wardrobe from a cave of entropy into a style sanctuary.

Having spent a decade in closets of celebrities, executives, and entrepreneurs, Shaniece Jones has worked on the set of music videos, magazine shoots, backstage at New York Fashion Week, and the like as a fashion assistant. A biologist at heart, Shaniece Jones studied people and the effects of their environment on their behaviors and, thus, developed a method to transform chaotic spaces into serene environments, empowering her clients to live with more intentions. Through her unique approach, she soon became known as ‘The Closet Girl’.

In this episode, Shaniece Jones explains the psychological benefits of a well-organized closet. She reveals that conducting a closet detox helps reduce cortisol levels, minimize stress, and save time. She also shares that, similar to regular therapy, closet therapy should be an ongoing effort, conducted once a month or quarterly.

Together, Shaniece Jones and Marie weigh up various habits, tools, and products that support closet therapy practice. So, from tackling sentimental dilemmas to how to kickstart the endeavor, tune in for Shaniece Jones’s top tips for an effective wardrobe detox.

  • Prof. Paul Burton: Sustainable Living in Tiny Houses | Room by Room #63
    2024/10/10

Are you longing for a simpler, more sustainable life? Tiny houses might hold the key. This week on Room by Room: The Home Organization Science Insights Podcast, host Marie Stella speaks to urban management and planning Professor Paul Burton about how these once-quirky homes are now seen as a potential solution to the housing affordability crisis.

Having trained and worked as a town planner in London in the 1970s, Prof. Paul Burton had his fair share of tiny home living as a diligent student. He then worked on his PhD at the University of Bristol and spent 25 years researching various urban problems. In 2007, he moved across the globe to Australia to join the Urban Research Program at Griffith University, where he established and led the university’s Cities Research Institute. Currently, he is researching the growing popularity of tiny homes in Australia and how planning systems help or hinder them, alongside Dr. Heather Shearer.

In this episode, Prof. Paul Burton walks through the rich history of tiny homes, revealing that ordinary houses, dating back to 100 years ago, were much smaller to begin with. That aside, he lists the plethora of tiny houses in existence, from conventional shipping containers and modern box-type abodes to eccentric American yellow school buses.

Together, Marie and Prof. Paul Burton weigh the slew of considerations to be made before committing to tiny home living, between permits and maintenance costs. So, tune in this week to learn more about the ins and outs of sizing down.
