Sam discusses the whole scheme with Thornton. Traditional black glazed pantiles are mentioned - brought over from Holland where they were invented in Zwolle in 1466 to improve on the over and under tapered cylindrical roof tile, traditonally used throughout southern Europe, were known as monk and nuns in Holland. Iron oxide (rust) was added to the glaze which, in the oxygen reducing atmosphere of the kiln, turn the glaze black.
