Ani DiFranco hosts Take Me To the River: New Orleans, a four-part podcast that celebrates the music of the Crescent City featured in the documentary film, Take Me To the River New Orleans. Director Martin Shore assembles an all-star cast of NOLA music icons from various generations and genres for once-in-a-lifetime recording sessions.
Episode 2 looks at different ways music education programs introduce the city's traditions to the next generations of talented students. Saxophonist and teacher, Donald Harrison, performs "When the Saints Come Marching In" with the Tipitina's interns. Derek Tabb describes his Roots of Music brass band program, who then jam with The Lost Bayou Ramblers and Ani DiFranco on the Cajun track, "Blue Moon Special." Big Chief Bo Dollis Jr of the Wild Magnolias also adds what they do to bring young people into the Mardi Gras Indians culture. All music clips from the double album soundtrack, available now from Petaluma Records.
