During her career, she has specialized in health equity, data-driven global therapy program strategy development, pitch and storytelling refinement, and identifying business opportunities within the pharma space. Beyond her professional endeavors, she's passionate about enhancing diversity in STEM fields, serving on advisory boards, participating as a judge in pitch/business competitions, and mentoring young professionals. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences from Wayne State University, a Ph.D. in Microbiology & Immunology from the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor, and certification from the Venture Capital Executive Program from UC Berkeley Haas School of Business. She is the founder of Empactful Ventures which currently consults healthcare-focused startups and venture funds, and she is a member of the Clinical Leader editorial board.

We talk books, book awards, woman’s rights, politics, the 2024 Election, Traverse City, Michigan and so much more. Amy is so intelligent and talented. Amy Shamroe was officially sworn in as the mayor of Traverse City, Michigan on Nov. 13, 2023. Amy served as a city commissioner for eight years and mayor pro tem for six years. Amy supports expanding access to affordable housing in and around Traverse City.

    She is a leader and the right candidate to bridge the communication gap between city and citizens. A graduate of Michigan State University, majoring in International Relations, she loves politics, books and is a supporter of the arts.

    Amy has been with Jenkins Group, an independent publisher for more than 15 years. Books have always been a huge part of her life. As a Book Awards Director, Amy Shamroe has been helping run the show since 2007, when she left full-time bookselling at a local independent store to join the book awards team. Over the last fifteen years, she has been actively involved in initiating and overseeing many of the changes that have kept certain book awards current and relevant to the industry. She puts in long hours managing the flow of the entries, judging books, and managing social media accounts. She loves working for the community as Mayor of the beautiful town of Traverse City, Michigan. She sits on many different boards and volunteers for many organizations. She also sits on the Local Friends of the Library Board and is the AAUW of Michigan State President. A strong advocate for Diversity, Equality and Inclusion, she is an example of leadership, perseverance and dedication. As a Type 1 Diabetic, she supports the cap on the cost insulin.

Lisa is a Child and mental health advocate, public speaker, Social Media Influencer and Radio Personality and the MA National Ambassador for Naasca (National Association of Adult Survivors of Child Abuse) She received the 2023 Women of Impact Award from the Business West Magazine. Lisa is the 2021 Massachusetts Heroine Award Recipient and she also has her own Blog on her website www.lisazarcone.net As the Massachusetts National Ambassador & Regional Director for NAASCA (National Association of Adult Survivors of Child Abuse), she uses her title and personal story as a platform to speak publicly about child abuse and mental health. She is also a Wife, mother of three and grandmother of four. Lisa took all her past experiences of trauma and abuse writing a powerful, raw and detailed memoir of her life. Lisa gained her voice by validating her story, healing through the process. It was a difficult journey, but she dug deep into her past, sifting through the rubble piece by piece. Lisa is a fierce advocate for child safety and mental health. Her life has felt like many different stories throughout her time. Having moved many times throughout her life, each time it felt like she began a new story. It was like each time she would become a different person with new challenges to take on. Meeting new people with new diversions to accomplish. Learning and finding new meanings in life. J. A. Smith believes the saying that people come into your life for a reason. They walk in when they are needed and then walk out when they have accomplished their quest, and that is how a good book is written. But with great imagination to go along with it. Not that all stories are good or bad, just unique in the way one who tells it. She believes, writing fantasy lets you see that anything is possible, it only allows the mind its freedom to see what can happen! She is thankful for the world of imagination! Well, she considers herself to be a Gypsy/ Her husband got his old job back in Honolulu, Hawaii and they moved back in March 2024 for the second time. Nandi even reads a poem for us at the end.🙏🏿Raised in Detroit and a graduate of Communications and Media Arts High School in Detroit, Nandi Comer has received bachelor’s degrees in English and in Spanish with an emphasis on Latin American Culture from the University of Michigan. She has received fellowships from Cave Canem, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, Vermont Studio Center, Callaloo, and a translation fellowship by U.S. Poets in Mexico. Nandi Comer’s writing received the Vera Myer Strube Award in poetry. Comer is the winner of Crab Orchard Review’s 2014 Richard Peterson Poetry Prize. In 2016, she completed a master’s degree in African American Literature from the Department of African American and African Diaspora Studies and a Master’s of Fine Arts degree in Poetry from the English Department at Indiana University. She is a 2019 Kresge Literary Arts Fellow. Over the years, Comer has been dedicated to youth development by serving as a writer-in-residence in Detroit Public Schools Community District and community centers. She has also worked in collaboration with organizations, including YArts and InsideOut Literary Arts Projects. Ms. Comer served as a curriculum developer and youth curriculum consultant for various arts organizations and in 2018 received the William Wiggins Award for Outstanding Teaching at Indiana University. Comer’s poems and essays have appeared or are forthcoming in Callaloo, Crab Orchard Review, The Journal of Pan African Studies, Sycamore Review, and Third Coast. She is the author of American Family: Syndrome (Finishing Line Press) and Tapping Out (Northwestern University Press), which was awarded the 2020 Society of Midland Authors Award and the 2020 Julie Suk Award. Comer is currently the director of Allied Media Projects Seeds Program and the co-director of Detroit Lit, a program dedicated to providing reading and professional development opportunities to narrative makers of color in Detroit. Guest held the title of Poet Laureate of the state of Michigan from 1952 until his death in 1959. Will Carleton (1847-1912) is sometimes referred to as the first Poet Laureate of Michigan. Public Act 51 of 1919 designated October 21 of each year as "Carleton Day" in memory of "Michigan's pioneer poet." However, "Carleton Day" was a commemorative school holiday in honor of Carleton as opposed to an appointed poet laureate title. "Carleton Day" was removed as a school holiday in 1995 as directed by Public Act 289 during a revision of the state of Michigan's school code.
