  • Cork club hurling, picking the player of the week and favourites for the county titles.
    2024/09/09

On The Echo Sport Podcast this week, Denis Hurley and Barry O'Mahony join Éamonn Murphy to review a bumper weekend of Cork club hurling action.

They look at the winners and losers from the group stages. Relegation battles loom for some big clubs, including Charleville, league finalists, who must now defeat Bishopstown to save their Premier Senior status after an epic battle with Kanturk.

They discuss the game of the weekend, where Éire Óg and Mallow shared eight goals and it took points scored overall to decide who progressed to the PIHC knockout stages. Killeagh also pulled off a great escape, beating Inniscarra by enough to get out of their group having had no points on the board after the first two rounds.

A Hurler of the Week is chosen with a number of strong candidates. Alan Walsh had a remarkable 3-3 from play for Kanturk while Conor Lehane was imperious for Midleton, lancing over 0-14. Patrick Collins made a string of critical saves for Ballinhassig who sent Kilworth, last year's PIHC runners-up, into a relegation playoff. Sean Desmond was electric for Watergrasshill as they topped a tricky group while James Masters continues to reel in the years for the Nemo hurlers.

Plus a preview of the matches you need to catch in this weekend's last round in the football championships, with one of the favourites St Finbarr's under pressure to get a result and Mallow looking to build on their upset last month.

  • The Echo Sport Podcast: Cork hurling special with Patrick Horgan and Shane Kingston.
    2024/09/05

Cork hurling stars Shane Kingston and Patrick Horgan join Éamonn Murphy in the studio for a special Echo Sport Podcast, brought to you in association with Blackwater Motors Group.

They look back at injury issues and controversial All-Ireland refereeing decisions as well as taking the positives from an epic campaign in Rebel red this summer. The connection with the supporters was a major element and they explain how the Cork-Limerick game in the Páirc was the loudest they'd ever experienced, even more than the All-Ireland final.

Horgan and Kingston tell us about their favourite boots, why they opted for the helmet colours they use and what pre-match rituals they have. What makes a hurley special? How much gym work is required in-season? How long can you put the hurley down for in the off-season?

The Blackwater Motors Group brand ambassadors explain what it's like dealing with the fame and pressure that comes with playing for Cork. They talk about the other sports they most enjoy watching, and how they unwind away from the pitch, from music to the cinema, including Horgan's love of Coldplay and Kingston's trip to see Deadpool & Wolverine.

This special episode was brought to you by Blackwater Motors Group, made up of the Volkswagen, Audi, Seat and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles brands, at locations in Cork city, Skibbereen, Fermoy and Tralee.

You can find us every week on Echoline.ie/podcast and all the major podcast platforms.
