Jesus didn't die for things, He died for people. Yet, Jonah was more concerned about a "thing" than he was for the people of Nineveh. This is a mistake that is all too common today. People put things above people.

Jonah was a real character with some serious flaws. Let's not be like Him and learn from his mistakes so we can have a proper value system of people over things.

Jonah was a successful prophet but he wasn't happy about it. The people of Nineveh responded to his message, God changed His mind about destroying them and Jonah was saddened. Imagine being sad at your won success. And why did Jonah feel this way? Because he hated what God loves.

It's amazing how God will bless obedience. And what is it that contributes to that blessing? It is one's reputation. The success of Jonah was in his reputation as being a recipient of the poser of God. The storm, the big fish, spit out on dry land was all of God's power. When people hear and understand that, they change.

Our lives follow that same track. We are all building a reputation. It is how people think of us while we are alive and how they think of us after we are gone. It is worthwhile to build the best one you can.

It's good to know that failure does not have to be the end of the road for us. Where would we be if not for God's grace? Jonah was thrown into the sea as a form of judgment for his disobedience. But he was spit up on dry land for a second chance at serving God. Mercy follows judgment.

Let's remember that when we fail. There may be discipline but with a humble heart, mercy restores.
