  • Athlone lift League Title as retirements rain in across the League
    2024/10/09

Swashbuckling Athlone Town secured their maiden league title with a resounding 2-0 victory over Bohemians on TG4 on Saturday despite Shels doing what was required of them with a 3-0 win over the previous champions Peamount.

Elsewhere a gallant Treaty overcame Galway to potentially set up their best finish to a season in some time as Sligo Rovers secured their first win of the season in their penultimate game in a disrupted game on Leeside. Wexford and Shamrock Rovers could not be separated in Ferrycarrig Park finishing 2-2.

Despite the glut of action across the league it was off the field events which dominated the coverage of the league this season as some end of season retirements are announced and Rovers defender Savannah McCarthy is pulled from a burning vehicle with serious injuries on Sunday evening.

  • Athlone closing in on League Title
    2024/09/25

Athlone secured a vital win this evening to take a five point lead at the top of the SSE Airtricity League Table with just three rounds of games to go and could wrap up the title as early as Saturday evening.

Brenda Tabe's double secured a key three points in the race for the title and the European football on offer to the champions. Of course Athlone also secured their third consecutive FAI Women's Cup final berth with a 1-0 victory in The Showgrounds over Sligo Rovers on Sunday afternoon.

Breifne Earley and Aaron Clarke (The WNL Show) will be chatting about the run in for all three sides ahead of a big weekend where Galway and Shels meet with at least one of them eliminated from the race by Saturday evening. A draw in Galway coupled with a victory for Athlone at home to Shamrock Rovers would see the Midlanders secure the trophy.

  • League Round Up & FAI Cup Semi Final Preview
    2024/09/18

This week the league title race really got underway with wins for Athlone Town and Galway United as saw them skip ahead of Shelbourne as Peamount came from behind to secure all three points at home to Bohemians with a scorcher from Niamh Farrelly sealing the win at the death.

DLR will be disappointed to have capitulated under the challenge of Galway in Belfield as Sligo Rovers left it late to take a point home from the battle of the Rovers at Tallaght as an early Shamrock Rovers goal promised much for the home side.

Cork City will be happy with their home draw with Wexford who face live now without Ellen Molloy who made the move across the Irish sea in recent week.

Breifne Earley and Aaron Clarke (The WNL Show) will also be previewing the FAI Women's Cup Semi Finals which take place this weekend.
