Mishlei 15:30 - Happy Hearts and Fat Bones (Part 2)

    Length: 47 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (6/12/25), in our last morning Mishlei shiur of the season, we began by reviewing yesterday's approaches, then delved into the peshat approach given by Rashi (!) and the Rid (!!), supported by the Rambam (!!!). After that, we took another swing at Metzudas David, and concluded with a quick read-through of the Malbim and some final words from Aristotle's Metaphysics.

I can't believe it's been FIVE YEARS since I started giving regular post-HS Mishlei shiurim and recording them! Unlike the past few years, I'm going to take a break from Mishlei shiurim over the summer. God willing, we'll resume in September. I hope you keep learning Mishlei on your own, and if you do, I'm always game to discuss a pasuk!

Summer is almost here, and I’m planning to level up my Substack game. In addition to my weekly article on the parashah, I’ve got a ton of other topics I want to write about, many of which are experimental (or spicy) enough to keep behind the paywall. I’m looking for sponsors and I'm willing to offer an insane deal: for every WEEK of Torah content you sponsor, I’ll comp you a full YEAR of paid subscriber access to my Substack. This offer is good through the end of June or until all my summer content is sponsored, whichever comes first.

Even a small contribution goes a long way to covering the costs of my podcasts, and will provide me with the financial freedom to produce even more Torah content for you.

Mishlei 15:30 - Happy Hearts and Fat Bones (Part 1)

    Length: 46 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (6/11/25), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we took up a pasuk which I anticipated to be difficult, due to the unfamiliar (and possibly outdated) references in the pasuk. Fortunately, we were able to develop at least one nice approach. We concluded by reading Metzudas David and Rabbeinu Yonah in preparation for tomorrow, which will be our final shiur of the 2024-2025 season.

Mishlei 15:29 - Mishlei's Advice for Getting Your Tefilah Heard (Part 2)

    Length: 48 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (5/29/25), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we began with my own take on the pasuk, which overlapped several of the explanations from yesterday. We then learned some meforshim which ALSO overlapped yesterday's explanations, before doing a somewhat deep-dive into the Meiri's understanding of the word תפילה. We concluded with R' Sheishes's practical idea about tefilah, paired with an excerpt from R' Eliezer Berkovitz on tefilas shav. All in all, I was delighted to see how my favorite subject of Mishlei was able to shed light on one of my other favorite subjects: tefilah!

    Length: 34 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (5/28/25), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we took up one of only three pesukim in Mishlei that explicitly reference tefilah. The problem with this pasuk is glaring: it seems SUPER obvious! To my surprise and delight, we came up with a ton of questions, and also managed to develop several fruitful approaches. Looking forward to seeing what the meforshim have to say tomorrow (בג"ה)!

    Length: 44 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (5/22/25), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we began by examining a "hot take" translation of our pasuk, which we ended up rejecting. After reviewing the questions and approaches from yesterday, we delved into the meforshim, taking up questions of methodology along the way. Although we didn't FULLY develop any of the new approaches, we discussed them enough to find practical takeaways.

Synopsis: This morning (5/21/25), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we learned a pasuk that I've never learned before! We spent a longer-than-usual time trying to pin down the most accurate translation, especially on account of the differences between the Masoretic text and another tradition (reflected in the Targum, Septuagint, and Syriac texts). After raising our usual amount of questions, we spent the rest of the time developing our own theories. Tomorrow, we'll see what the meforshim have to say!

Mishlei 16:33 - Does Hashem Determine Who Wins the Lottery?

    Length: 1 hour 18 minutes
Synopsis: This evening (5/19/25), in the last Monday Night Mishlei shiur of the 2024-2025 season, we concluded the 16th perek of Mishlei with a whopper of a pasuk! I was glad to see that I wasn't the only one who was bothered by the anomalous and theologically difficult nature of the statement. We came up with more questions than I anticipated, and more ideas as well. After sharing my own approach which I supported with the Rambam and the GRA, we learned Rabbeinu Yonah's context-based approach, then called it a night. This was a great year of Mishlei learning, and I look forward to resuming towards the beginning of the 2025-2026 school year (בג"ה).

    Length: 45 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (5/15/25), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we began with an addendum to our translation of yesterday's pasuk. We then reviewed the approaches we took yesterday, learning through similar explanations in the meforshim. I then shared the approach of my rebbi, Rabbi Moskowitz zt"l, based on Rashi. We concluded by raising a question on the approach taken by the majority of the meforshim, but were happily sidetracked by my favorite Rambam in Sefer Zera'im. If you have other thoughts on this fruitful pasuk, please let me know!
