The Religion of Positivity

  • Something that we’ve noticed within the entrepreneurial space is the focus on positivity, to the point of perfectionism. Does that really get us anywhere? Does it really serve us to eliminate every negative thought or feeling? Is the morality of “good” and “bad” feelings getting in the way of you getting your work done?

    Good thoughts=good feelings=good actions=good results, right? If only it were that simple.  Emotions are a natural part of the human experience, and this formula doesn’t account for any privileges you may or may not have. 

    Try this exercise: Next time you notice a negative or “bad” thought, stop and identify how that thought and feeling is helping you. Is it protective? Is it shining a light on a fear or maladaptive coping strategy you need to deal with? Then, have some compassion with yourself and decide what you want to do with that information.
