    Hogmanay

Come in come in it’s nice you see you! This is The Scottishist and I am Laura Macdonald.

In this Festive edition of The Scottishist we are are going old school in terms of Scottish traditions, by ignoring Christmas completely and putting all of our energies into celebrating the New Year - known in these parts as Hogmanay. So grab your friends, a woolly hat, hip flask, slice of fruitcake - it’s the last day of the year, so it’s a party you’ll be looking for.

Thanks to JonBoy for the theme music.

    Bliadhna ùr mhath dhuibh uile.

    Happy Hogmanay everyone!

You can check out the Stonehaven Fireballs Website to follow along the action.

If you are interested in finding a Nippy Dip or Loonydook near you then try searching facebook for your nearest swimming community and ask them if you can pop along - outdoor swimmers are super friendly!

You can follow The Scottishist Podcast on instagram, facebook and tiktok and hopefully I will learn how they work one day.

Hello and welcome to The Scottishist where we take running jump and dive into the gorgeously pure, peaty, murky fresh and salty waters that are the icons of Scottish Culture.

Today Im joined by academic David Leishman and we are popping the top on our 'Other National Drink', Barrs - Irn Bru. We’re going to get into the history of Irn Bru as well as brush the dust off some of the myths surrounding this icon of Scottish food culture.

    Why the Saltire?

Hello and welcome to the first episode of The Scottishist. In every episode of The Scottishist I’m taking a dive into an icon of Scottish culture to find out why it is just so iconic -  and I’ll be bringing the answers - right to your ear holes.

For the first episode we are getting under the blankets with the vexillology crew and looking the flag of Scotland right in it’s blue and white face. What’s the story, why do we fly the Saltire? And when did we start? What’s is got to do with Saint Andrew? What shade of blue is it exactly, does it matter?  And what does the saltire actually mean in Scotland today?
