An artifact with strange engravings on it is found off of the coast of Africa. When a rubbing of these engravings is shown to Mulder, confusing noises happen inside his head. The agents look to uncover the origin of this mysterious artifact and to find out why it is having a singular effect on Mulder.

A young married couple's skeletons are found together on a field in the mountains after only being reported missing for three days. The area where their skeletons were found is known for UFO activity, so Mulder and Scully go there to investigate it. Mulder finds the couple alive and all signs point to an alien abduction. But everything is not as it seems.

Mulder finds a photograph of Arthur Dales with a baseball team and the alien bounty hunter. Mulder goes to Arthur Dales' house to ask him about the photograph. There he finds Arthur Dales' brother, also named Arthur. Mr. Dales proceeds to tell Mulder a story of a 1940s Negro baseball player in Roswell named Josh Exley and that Exley was actually an alien.

Mulder and Scully are on a case involving murder victims whose hearts have apparently been removed by hand. The new next-door neighbor of Mulder has an infatuation with Agent Scully. He is a writer, and the agents find that the novel he is currently writing includes Scully and suspiciously mirrors the gruesome murders that they are investigating.

An escaped convict, who seems to have gained the ability to pass through solid objects as well as people, which kills them, appears to be looking for the $90,000 he hid somewhere after the bank robbery for which he was imprisoned. In protecting his ex-girlfriend Mulder discover the deadly convict is searching for his son.

Two men are found mauled to death inside a locked cargo container that was supposed to be carrying a extremely rare breed of dog from China to the United States. The dog is now on the loose and killing more people. Mulder and Scully's interest in this case is in the unique human behavior that this killer dog is exhibiting.
