Welcome, dear listeners, to another thought-provoking journey into the depths of our shared humanity. This episode is a personal reflection, an intimate conversation with you, as we delve into a question that has guided my life: 'Who Am I?'
At the tender age of 7, I stood before a mirror and posed this profound question to myself, setting in motion a lifelong exploration of identity and self-discovery. We all enter this world with labels assigned to us - names, religions, nationalities, and races. From that moment, we embark on a journey to defend these identities bestowed upon us by society.
My journey took a significant turn when, at 12, I arrived in the United States, a land whose diversity challenged my preconceived notions. I witnessed behaviors that didn't align with my cultural programming, and it led me to question what defines 'normal.' These early experiences planted the seeds of prejudice.
I faced derogatory names, mostly from individuals whose backgrounds were foreign to me. My mother, wise in her own way, advised me to respond with humor. School became a battlefield, and my ESL class offered solace. I realized I lacked an understanding of the complex racial dynamics that shape American society.
An unwelcome belief emerged - 'Stay away from certain groups; they might harm you.' Fear began to guide my actions. It wasn't until I lived with an African American family that my perspective began to shift. Observations within their home and community sparked a deep curiosity about the factors influencing the behavior of individuals within the same racial group.
This quest for answers led me down a path of history and the exploration of self-awareness and self-love. What I uncovered is that our shared need for significance often drives our actions, for better or worse.
I questioned annual practices like Black History Month, wondering about the impact of constantly reminding individuals of their historical pain. I believe in the power of open and honest discussions to foster understanding and empathy. Our world is like an abstract artwork, each person's lens offering a unique view.
In a world where we must be willing to see through others' eyes, I firmly believe that all perspectives are relevant and valid. What changes is the lens through which we see.
At the end of the day, we all have the power to choose love or not. We're either creating love or not. It's one or the other. So, dear listeners, what are you creating?
Join me as we embark on this introspective journey and ponder the profound question that lies at the core of our human existence. Together, we'll explore identity, understanding, and the power to shape a more connected and harmonious world.
