Optimizing Healthcare Logistics: Artug Acar on Mercury Business Services’ Innovative Approach
in this Podcast, we had the opportunity to meet with Artug Acar, a mechanical engineer who transitioned into software warehouse automation, to discuss his journey and role at Mercury Business Services, a logistics company specializing in time and temperature sensitive shipping for biotech healthcare and life sciences.
After working in automation at Amazon Robotics and several startups, he joined Mercury following its acquisition and restructuring by Josh Meadow in 2020. At Mercury, Acar initially served as VP of Products and Engineering and is now involved in multiple business areas. With a strong focus on healthcare and life sciences, the company aims to fill a critical logistics gap in this sector, especially given the industry's reliance on reliable, time-sensitive, and temperature-controlled shipments.
Mercury is a global freight forwarder for healthcare, life sciences, and medical devices, focusing on markets like diagnostic kits and research materials. Unlike traditional logistics providers, Mercury uses an "asset-free" model. Mercury doesn’t own trucks or planes but leverages a vast network of carriers to offer shipping solutions tailored to each client’s needs. This flexibility allows Mercury to adapt to various client requirements, from small lab shipments to complex clinical trial materials. Its Columbus-based support team, known as “squads” or “guides,” provides personalized service to clients, guiding them through each shipment to ensure safe and timely deliveries.
The company leverages extensive historical data and machine learning to optimize delivery routes, forecast potential delays, and adjust logistics plans in real-time. Acar explained how Mercury’s software is being enhanced to utilize this data, enabling predictive modeling and improving decision-making, such as selecting the best routes and modes of transportation based on factors like weather and carrier performance. Future software updates aim to incorporate AI, allowing the system to proactively suggest optimal logistics paths, increasing client efficiency and reliability.
Mercury’s services have also grown to include various shipping options like next-flight-out and same-day local ground shipping and consolidation services for clients in specific areas like Cambridge. These offerings allow Mercury to meet urgent client needs and efficiently transport sensitive materials by consolidating shipments to a central location before handing them over to a primary carrier. With this range of services and technological advancements, Acar emphasized Mercury's commitment to functioning as an in-house logistics partner for clients, providing highly customized, reliable, and proactive logistics solutions essential to the healthcare and life sciences industries.
