  • 110. Pressing Pause: Navigating Cancer with Dr. Laura James, Naturopathic Oncologist (RE RELEASE)
    2025/03/27

In today’s episode, we are joined by my naturopathic oncologist, Dr. Laura James.

As you listen to our discussion, it's essential to acknowledge the whirlwind that accompanies a cancer diagnosis. For many, including myself, the speed at which treatment unfolds can be both a blessing and a challenge. The urgency of medical intervention, coupled with the support of excellent health insurance and the unique circumstances of the COVID-19 era, can lead to a swift entry into what is commonly referred to as the breast cancer industrial complex.

But what exactly does this term mean? It's a new concept that encompasses medical advancements, institutional processes, and societal expectations surrounding cancer treatment. While grateful for the prompt attention and care received, there's an underlying need to address the implications of this fast-paced medical industry.

For me, and perhaps for many others, navigating the breast cancer industrial complex has raised questions about agency, reflection, and informed decision-making. The speed at which decisions are made can sometimes overshadow the opportunity for thorough consideration, prayer, and seeking second opinions—elements crucial to holistic well-being.

Together with Dr. James, we'll explore the importance of empowerment in the face of medical urgency, the role of advocacy in navigating treatment pathways, and the significance of holistic approaches to cancer care.

    Air Dr.

I've been using the Air Doctor air purifier for almost a year and absolutely love it! I first heard about it from Dr. Mark Hyman, and even though it was a bit of a splurge compared to what I usually spend, I'm so glad I invested. Every time I change the filter and see all the gunk it collects, I smile, knowing it's doing a great job keeping my air clean!

    And I'm so happy that all that gunk isn't going into my body ;

    Just Add Buoy

Companies contact me every week, asking me to try their products.

Honestly, I get food and supplement samples almost weekly!

Last week, a San Diego company called Just Add Buoy emailed me to ask if I wanted to try their electrolyte formula.

I said yes because I've been looking for an electrolyte formula (without tons of sugar, both fake and real and no dyes) for years.

They sent me some samples, and I must tell you how much I love them.

I'm trying the Hydration Drops, and they have 87 trace minerals, Ionic ocean electrolytes, and antioxidants. And, also important to me, NO SUGAR (FAKE OR REAL), NO ADDITIVES OR DYES. And it's non-GMO.

I like that it's flavorless, and I can add it to a smoothie or even my morning coffee without noticing any flavor change.

  • 109. Does Alcohol Cause Cancer?
    2025/03/20
Buckle up for today's episode with The Oncology Dietician, Nichole Andrews. I like having cocktails with girlfriends. And before I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I never gave it a second thought. Alcohol was part of my social life, or I'd have a glass of wine on a flight to chill out. Recent research has made me rethink my choices. Research shared by the Susan G. Komen Center tells us that each cocktail I consume can increase my breast cancer risk by 7%. And 2-3 drinks per day can increase my risk by 20%. I work too damn hard on my health to increase my breast cancer risk by 20% for something I often do mindlessly. Does this mean I don't drink any alcohol? NOPE. This means that if I really want that glass of wine, I will make an informed decision and enjoy every sip. The "old" me would have grabbed the wine and probably a second glass without considering what it might be doing inside my body. According to today's guest, she believes there are only two things that we consume that can really increase our risk of getting cancer. Alcohol is one. Any guesses as to what number two is? Listen to today's episode to find out! ______ Just Add Buoy Companies contact me every week, asking me to try their products. Honestly, I get food and supplement samples almost weekly! • 108. I Wish I Would Have Known! My Key 2024 Takeaways
    2025/03/13

I wish I could have a "do-over" in two areas of my life:

    1. Prioritizing my morning schedule
    2. Speaking positively about situations or people instead of negatively.

When my morning routine is off, the rest of my day suffers. I've FINALLY learned to listen to my inner voice, which advises me to take it slow in the morning instead of jumping straight into emails and calls.

I give three tips on starting my day on today's podcast.

Here's a sneak peek at one of my tips:

TURN OFF THE LOUD ALARM ON YOUR PHONE.

Hearing a loud noise while sleeping immediately puts your body into a stressful situation. Your blood pressure and heart rate increase, and your body starts making stress hormones. It can take hours for your body to calm down.

Instead, I found some gentle instrumental music and used that as my alarm sound.

This simple morning hack has added much-needed calmness to my morning, and I find that relaxed "vibe" spills over into the rest of my day.

    Winning!

    Confession time:

I'm not always upbeat and cheery. Shocking, huh?

I find that when my stress level goes up, my mindset and attitude get a little, well, poopy.

Last week, I decided to spend a week making only positive statements.

Guess what? It was a little quiet around my house because I wasn't complaining about the world, news, my recent breast reconstruction, you name it.

I learned a valuable lesson: sometimes, when I want to connect with my husband after work, it's easier to default to negative.

UGH, help me. I'm a work in progress, but I am learning.

Listen to today's short solo episode to learn more of my simple tips for encouraging yourself and lowering your morning stress levels.

    Seriously, these tips work!
