  • In December 1940, the British Empire launched a highly successful counter-offensive against Italian Fascist forces in Egypt and Italian-occupied East Africa. As a result of this attack, Italy lost control of eastern Libya in early February 1941 and a large number of their soldiers were captured. Along with the land shock, Italian naval power was also severely damaged. At the Battle of Taranto three battleships were destroyed by Royal Navy aircraft carrier attacks and at the Battle of Cape Matapan several more ships were lost.
