    This mixtape is a collection of vaporwave edits I’ve discovered over the past few months. As I drive and stream Nightwave Plaza, I save any earworm that catches my ear. After a month or two, I sit down with Bandcamp open, track down each song, and finally clear out the saved screenshots from my phone.

    With hardly any free time anymore, I’ve started cooking up vaporwave edits on the weekends to make the most of the few hours I get to myself.

    During the pandemic, I discovered Vaporwave while working from home and was instantly hooked by the often repetitive, chopped-and-screwed edits of obscure ‘80s and ‘90s tracks, which reminded me of the DJ Screw tapes I used to bump back in college—especially the random ‘80s rock or R&B songs that he would slip onto those tapes. I also dug the seemingly random Windows clipart aesthetic in much of the artwork. This tape might be a departure from my usual, but I only post bangers.

    These are all edits that I’ve done over the last year. The formula goes something like this: start with a pristine audio file, slow it down until it sounds "right", then experiment with different analog emulation plugins until you end up with something that could fit on a screw tape (“It’s goin’ down!”). Lastly, give the artwork a similar treatment, and you’re all set.

    The System に称賛の花束を贈る時が来ました。1982年に結成され、1990年まで活動していたボーカリストのミック・マーフィーとマルチインストゥルメンタリスト/プロデューサーのデヴィッド・フランクのデュオは、シンセドリブンでありながらソウルフルなR&Bのエレクトロニックなサウンドスケープを作り上げ、ジャンルを超えてシフトする精緻なトラックを生み出しました。深みのあるカタログには「I Can't Take Losing You」や「Promises Can Break」といった隠れた名曲が数多く含まれており、代表曲「Don’t Disturb This Groove」だけに留まらない豊かな音楽的レンジが垣間見えます。

    I firmly believe that both mainstream Rock and Roll and Hip Hop died in the year 2000. That said, I have a genuine soft spot for the early days of Skratch 'N Sniff's blends before they started putting dubstep drops on everything and I lost interest after 2010. They used to post their edits on a now-defunct site as full tracks, and at some point around 2008 or so, I grabbed as many as I could and tucked them away for safekeeping. It's time to give Skratch 'N Sniff their flowers. I'm not sure if they're still on San Diego's 91X, where I first found them in 2003, but their weekly remix show is nationwide now. I should check in and see what they've been up to.

That said, I have a genuine soft spot for the early days of Skratch 'N Sniff's blends before they started putting dubstep drops on everything and I lost interest after 2010. They used to post their edits on a now-defunct site as full tracks, and at some point around 2008 or so, I grabbed as many as I could and tucked them away for safekeeping. It's time to give Skratch 'N Sniff their flowers. I'm not sure if they're still on San Diego's 91X, where I first found them in 2003, but their weekly remix show is nationwide now. I should check in and see what they've been up to.

Unfortunately, this one got taken down a few years ago, so I've done my best to obscure the featured artist here, but real heads will know.     -If you're curious about the poor sound quality... After a lifetime obsessed with high-fidelity, I realized I missed the compressed, warm sound of cassettes and even FM radio from my childhood. So, for the last few years, I've run all my mixtapes through a DAW and applied several combinations of lo-fi plugins to them. I definitely EQ'd it for low highs and lots of bump. In other words, it's meant to sound that way.

    音質が悪い理由が気になる方へ... 高忠実度にこだわってきた人生の後、子供の頃のカセットやFMラジオの圧縮された暖かい音が恋しくなりました。ここ数年、すべてのミックステープをDAWで処理し、いくつかのローファイプラグインを適用しています。低い高音とたくさんのバンプのためにEQを調整しました。つまり、意図的にそういう音にしているのです。
