Comme elle, sa jumelle littéraire est divorcée, actrice de music-hall, écrivaine et surtout farouchement indépendante. Elle se laisse pourtant toucher par Max, un homme beau, brillant et riche : une intrigue simplissime dont Colette a l'audace de prendre le contre-pied pour mieux interroger l'indépendance, le courage et la liberté des femmes et réaffirmer leur force.
