Two swindlers pose as tailors and offer to supply an emperor with beautiful clothes that are woven from fabric so fine, you can only see it if you're smart enough. The emperor hires them to create a magnificent new garment for him so they set about working... but the swindlers don't plan to make anything at all.

Andie Gladman is your typical kid—she lives in a small town, doesn't have many friends and quietly puts up with taunts from the school bully, Myrtle Klinghoffer. But one day, a new neighbor moves into the house next to Andie's family . . . and he looks awfully familiar. Could he be famous author Hans Christian Andersen? Andie sure thinks so, and the arrival of this well-known writer inspires Andie to write her own poems (with a feminist twist) based on his classic fairy tales.

Like everyone else in the kingdom, two clever swindlers understand the emperor's passion for new clothes. Claiming to be the creators of the richest and most beautiful cloth in the world, they cleverly announce that the magical garments they are weaving for the emperor are invisible to anyone lacking intelligence. Who will have the courage to speak the truth?
