In other words, the heart is the source of all vital operations; it is the origin of both good and evil, just as the spring in a watch that sets all the wheels in motion.

John Flavel (1627-1691) was an English Presbyterian clergyman, puritan, and popular author. Christ Altogether Lovely is a short meditation on the life and work of Jesus Christ. The text is introduced by a quote from The Song of Songs: "This is my beloved, and this is my friend." (Song of Songs 5:16). Flavel highlights Christ's offices as prophet, priest, and king, and his relations to Christians as savior, advocate, bridegroom, and friend.
