身のおとろへに外ならぬかな

桐壺帝が位を去り、朱雀帝（すざくてい）が誕生した。藤壺の産んだ若宮は東宮となり、光源氏はその後見人となる。
葵祭の行事に源氏が参列することになった。恋する人の姿をひと目見たいと身分を隠して訪れた六条御息所（ろくじょうのみやすどころ）であったが、正妻葵の上（あおいのうえ）と鉢合わせになり、見物の場所をめぐって車争いを起こしてしまう。衆人の前で恥をかかされた六条御息所は、葵の上を深く恨む。
懐妊していた葵の上は、その後、体調がすぐれず病床に伏すが、それは六条御息所の生霊の仕業であった。やがて葵の上は男児を出産するが、容態が急変して命を落としてしまう。
葵の上の四十九日ののち、源氏は美しく成長した若紫と結婚する

病に悩まされていた光源氏は、治療のために北山を訪れ、思いを寄せる藤壺によく似た少女若紫（わかむらさき）を垣間見る。若紫が藤壺の姪であることを知った源氏は、若紫の祖母の尼君に結婚を前提に若紫の後見を申し出るが、その幼さゆえに断られる。
正妻の葵の上（あおいのうえ）の冷たい態度に満足しない源氏は、しきりに北山に文を送った。またこのころ、源氏は病のために里帰りしていた藤壺と再会する。その後、藤壺は光源氏の子を宿してしまう。
北山では、若紫の祖母の尼君が他界し、父兵部卿宮（ひょうぶきょうのみや）が若紫を引き取りに来ることになっていた。

お秋は村次とは腐れ縁だった。十八の頃に出会ってからはや九年、仕事がものになれば、お秋を苦界の商売から足を洗わせてやる……何度もそう言われ続け、お秋は彼との縁を切れずにいた。その一方で船宿の船頭である藤吉には強く思いを寄せられ、一緒になろうと迫られていたが、村次のこともあり、お秋は断り続けていた。
　ある日、店にはおせんという十七の娘がやって来た。借金を抜いて一人が店を出ることになった代わりだった。お秋は世話をしてやり、おせんを気に掛けるが、一方のおせんはなかなかお秋に懐こうとしなかった。
そしてある日、村次が「商売がうまく行かなかった」と、お秋に鞍替えの話を持って来た時、女主人はお秋に対して、おせんの身の上を話すのだった。それはお秋が思ってもみない残酷な真実だった……
