　ある日、店にはおせんという十七の娘がやって来た。借金を抜いて一人が店を出ることになった代わりだった。お秋は世話をしてやり、おせんを気に掛けるが、一方のおせんはなかなかお秋に懐こうとしなかった。
そしてある日、村次が「商売がうまく行かなかった」と、お秋に鞍替えの話を持って来た時、女主人はお秋に対して、おせんの身の上を話すのだった。それはお秋が思ってもみない残酷な真実だった……
