By the time someone decides to come along and see a therapist, they often feel like they’ve been stuck going around in circles for quite some time. This book addresses and highlights the common reasons why people seek therapy feeling stuck in their lives. What happens more often than not is that the client kind of realizes what the particular problem is, but they just can’t seem to get to the bottom of why they keep doing the problem.

Most people start smoking at a younger stage of life where, maybe, they're under a lot of stress. There's a lot of uncertainty, a lot of self-doubt. They don't feel self-confident in themselves. Then, over the years, they kind of grow up a bit. They mature a bit, and they get to the point where they're a little bit more motivated to care for themselves and look after themselves. They get to that point where they feel a strong desire to want to stop smoking. They use some patches, change some routines, they break the habit. They stay on the wagon so long as life doesn't get in the way.

Go out and ask a bunch of your friends whether or not they have a preference for Coke and Pepsi. Some people say they taste the same, but most people will say they can taste the difference. Ask your friends if they think the subtle meanings portrayed in each brands advertising has affected the way they feel about the drink. Inevitably, they will say no. Inevitably, they will say that the only thing that affects the way they feel about the product is the way it tastes.

Depression is something that I know well myself, both from personal experience and from the experiences of many people close to me. I remember receiving the diagnosis and the explanation that I had a chemical imbalance in my brain. I saw numerous doctors, but I only seem to remember them asking me about the symptoms. As I recall, the outcome was only ever one of four things. The doctor would tell me that I would have to start medication; the next doctor would ask me to stop medication, another would ask me to try some new medication, and yet another doctor would adjust my medication.

I once had a therapy client who told me she bought an exercise bike about six months prior to coming in for some one on one coaching. As is the fate of most exercise bikes, treadmills, and gym equipment, it just sat there getting dusty. So she was thinking about getting rid of it. The owners of the Point Pleasant Chalet dropped the Christmas Ball in my lap with only two weeks to plan the big event. I’m totally overwhelmed.
