His crew gets infected by malaria, and he finds out the medicine necessary to save them is missing deliberately after a couple of days wandering in the sea with no wind in sight. His mate convinces him that the ghost of the previous captain, who before his death turned insane and wanted to take the ship down along himself and the crew, has cursed them.

Heart of Darkness centers around Marlow, an introspective sailor, and his journey up the Congo River to meet Kurtz, reputed to be an idealistic man of great abilities. Marlow takes a job as a riverboat captain with the Company, a Belgian concern organized to trade in the Congo. As he travels to Africa and then up the Congo, Marlow encounters widespread inefficiency and brutality in the Company’s stations. The natives of the region have been forced into the Company’s service, and they suffer terribly from overwork and ill treatment at the hands of the Company’s agents.

The story centers on Charles Marlow, who narrates most of the book. He is an Englishman who takes a foreign assignment from a Belgian trading company as a river-boat captain in Africa. Heart of Darkness exposes the dark side of European colonization while exploring the three levels of darkness that the protagonist, Marlow, encounters: the darkness of the Congo wilderness, the darkness of the Europeans' cruel treatment of the African natives, and the unfathomable darkness within every human being for committing heinous acts of evil.

Hounded by an act of cowardice that follows him constantly, Jim wanders the world and eventually settles in the Far East. Here, slowly but surely, he comes to terms with his inner turmoil through acts of courage and leadership. But have the psychological demons that haunt him finally been exorcised? First published in 1897, The Nigger of the Narcissus is the story of a black West Indian, James Wait, who signs aboard the Narcissus, a merchant sailing ship on a journey from Bombay to London. Wait almost immediately becomes ill and bedridden for the remainder of the journey, splitting the crew into factions. It has long been considered one of Joseph Conrad's best and most important works.

In Conrad's haunting novella, narrator Marlow recounts his experiences in the Congo Free State, and his chilling and perilous quest upriver in search of visionary ivory trader, the enigmatic Mr Kurtz. He must conceal his presence from the sailors with whom he shares this ship, and so he and the stowaway become conspirators. The young captain must challenge his own morality and the sworn obligations of a sea captain. He must decide who he wants to be as a man and as a moral actor in the arduous undertaking of endeavoring to deliver this fugitive to safety.

Ich verlangte nichts von ihr, nicht einmal Abenteuer. Darin zeigte ich vielleicht mehr intuitive Weisheit als große Selbstverleugnung, denn noch nie wurden Abenteuer erlebt, nach denen man verlangte.
