• S4 EP2: ADHD Fueled Authenticity, Trust in Leadership
    2024/12/26
"ADHD Fueled Authenticity, Trust in Leadership," an episode where we explore how embracing neurodiversity and being true to yourself can revolutionise business and leadership. Have you ever wondered if there was a better way to approach business, something more than just skills and profit? I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Jenna Hatch, the founder and CEO of Project Outsource, and her story really made me think about the power of authenticity and genuine connection.Jenna’s approach to business is anything but ordinary. She’s built a thriving offshore virtual assistant company by turning the traditional model on its head. Instead of focusing solely on qualifications and experience, she prioritises what she calls the "magic" connection – that spark of recognition when two people just click. She achieves this through a unique discovery process where she delves into the personal interests and hobbies of both clients and virtual assistants, aiming to create a bond that fosters trust and collaboration. It’s a method born out of her own life experience, and her belief that shared passions and genuine relationships are the true currency of business.Jenna's journey hasn’t always been straightforward. She describes her life as having the “ADHD of life”, often moving rapidly between different industries and roles, always seeking new challenges. She was diagnosed with ADHD later in life, and has come to view her neurodivergence as a superpower, that allows her to see multiple paths to a single goal. Growing up, Jenna had to be very aware of other people’s emotions, which has allowed her to develop an exceptional emotional intelligence. She uses this unique ability to “read people” to create connections quickly, often feeling as if she has known them forever. Her story resonated with me because I too, have always felt like an outsider, constantly searching for a deeper connection and always moving to the next challenge. It’s these shared experiences that have shaped our approaches, and it seems we both feel like we’ve been through a “life university”, learning invaluable lessons through our challenges that no formal education could have taught us.Jenna's unique recruitment process allows her to look for the "magic", matching clients and virtual assistants on a personal level, increasing the speed in which trust is built. She is passionate about the idea of "human-centric" business, and she works as a mediator to help resolve miscommunications and to create a supportive environment where everyone can contribute their best work. She's not afraid to show her authentic self either, and she often reminds people that "it's real life", so interruptions from children, pets, or everyday life should not be something to hide. She openly shares her journey of personal growth, particularly her “aha moment” at 35 where she began setting clear boundaries, and began to be truer to herself. This involved leaving a successful but stressful corporate role, where she was over-worked and on prescribed medication to cope with the stress. Jenna realised she had the power to say no and prioritize her well-being, and she is now helping others to do the same. Her philosophy is that small victories add to large ones, and that it’s all about perspective. Here are some of the key things we discussed, which really stood out to me:* How being authentic attracts like-minded individuals* The importance of building trust quickly in business through genuine connections* The value of setting boundaries and prioritising your mental health* Turning perceived flaws into superpowers, particularly when it comes to neurodiversity.* How to use empathy and emotional intelligence to foster collaboration, and create a positive work environment. This conversation with Jenna was a reminder that business, at its heart, is about people and that true success comes from building genuine relationships. I hope her story will inspire you to embrace your own authenticity and build connections in your own life.If you're curious to learn more about Jenna, her unique business approach, and how you can start building your own authentic connections, I encourage you to listen to our full conversation. More than just memory, this is a story of personal growth and the "Kaizen" approach of continuous daily improvement. Dave emphasises the importance of comparing yourself to your past self, not to others and he discusses how he found the gift of optimism that allowed him to stay motivated.
