Practical Ways to Make Friends + Put Yourself Out There

From the Blog Post: HOW TO MAKE NEW FRIENDS: 8 WAYS TO PUT YOURSELF OUT THERE (read the post or take a listen to episode 10 or just listen in)

In this episode we talk about how it can be hard to make new friends as an a adult and why. We also chat about making friends in terms of living in the same place versus internationally and give tactical ways to put yourself out there and spark invitations and conversations to make new friends.

    NOTES:

    - How friendship evolves and why making friends when you're older gets harder.

    - Working versus staying at home and how that affects making friends.

    - Why it may be hard to make new friends when you live in one place.

    - The perception we have of making friends and how it holds us back.

    - Some times you have an establishment to help you make the effort but sometimes it's on you to make the effort.

    - How you put yourself out there if you aren't the kind of person who puts themselves out there.

    - Getting out of the friend rut.

    - New friends, new conversations.

    - Some ways to make new friends...

    TAKEAWAYS:

    1. Don't Persume (LOL. a word Husband made up) that everyone's busy and ask.

    2. You have to make the effort.

    3. Find your thing and invite people to join you.

    4. Let go of the outcome. Put it out there and don't let a NO mean anything.

    5. Putting yourself out there can be hard. Know that.

    6. Be yourself. You want to find people you connect with and that will only happen when you are yourself.

    QUICK SHOT QUESTIONL

What Christmas singer would you want to be your roommate?

  • 010. Be a Person that Goes Beyond Inviting People... and Welcomes Them.
    2021/12/09

In this episode we talk about the difference between inviting someone and truly welcoming them.

    NOTES:

    - Inviting is easy, welcoming takes more effort.

    - Effort + Intentionality is what sets inviting and welcoming apart.

    - Welcoming isn't the same thing as having people come over.

    - Don't be a lazy host or make guests do the work.

    - Be purposeful about who is coming into your space.

    - Check in with every person.

    - Think about your space and how to make that space work for you.

    - Avoid a Set Seating Situation Stagnancy LOL

    - Scan the room and see who needs to be welcomed in.

    - As a host and human, it's important to see people.

    - Seek out those that might have a harder time fitting in.

    - Physically welcome people.

    - As an invitee, how can you make yourself feel welcome?

    - Find a thing you do well and lead with that —dad jokes, questions, compliments—and then follow up.

    TAKEAWAYS:

    1. Being purposeful. As the host, it's YOUR job.

    2. Space matters.

    3. See + seek.

    4. Ask questions to get people to open up.

    QUICK SHOT QUESTION:

What is your favorite fair/carnival food?

And because this sparked a debate... would you say fair or carnival?

  • 009. Prioritizing Positivity: Choosing the Things That Bring you Joy and Making Them a Must!
    2021/12/02

In this episode we talk about prioritizing positivity a concept from Meaghan Murphy's book Your Fully Charged Life. It's a simple idea that many of us skip. We talk about

    - the difference between trying to be happy versus seeking out the things that naturally bring us joy.

    - making a magical wand list -- no limits

    - how to prioritize

    - what we personally prioritize (think about what YOU would prioritize)

    - not trying to prioritize things that other people find joy in but knowing yourself and being true to yourself

    Quick Shot Question:

If you could only listen to the same 3 holiday songs, what songs would you choose?

  • 008: Adventure Mindset: Making Mundane, Frustrating Sh*t Feel like an Adventure
    2021/11/23
Often times people think that because we live abroad, we live a life of adventure. Not so. In this episode we talk about how our life is pretty ordinary and full of routine and there's actually a lot that could make it messy and frustrating like when the power goes out in the kitchen and we have to move our coffee maker to the living room or how every single time we use the dryer, we have to run the exhaust pipe out of the back patio door. It's really all about perspective and looking at things through the lens of adventure. Quick Shot Question: What actor/actress would you want on your side if you were in bar fight? • 007. Lessons from a Cocktail Recipe + A Friend of Pirates
    2021/11/18

We can learn something from any failure. In this episode, we talk about a cocktail we were mixing for one of our monthly Virtual Happy Hours and how it freaking bombed the first time we tried it. Seriously... it was horrible. But that's ok but we learned a few things from that.

    Takeaways:

    1. Sometimes your first attempt is a failure and you have to switch, tweak, pivot, and restest.

    2. You have to have the humility to know that you don't know everything.

    3. You never know how something will go/taste/look/be until you try it.

Quick Shot Question: What booze base is your personality? Though Husband breaks rules and chooses something not on topic 😆

  • 006. Ask for More, Fill Up Your Plate, and Leave the Crumbs
    2021/11/11

From the Blog Post: I Don't Want a Life of Crumbs and Neither Should You In this episode we talk about how the choice to never settle for less than you deserve is yours alone.

Jen shares how a past break up made her realize that she didn't want a life of "crumbs", a life where she accepted less that what she was wanted—in any circumstance or relationship.

    Notes:

    - Accepting (and being ok with) less isn't the same as lowering the bar.

    - Knowing the difference between settling versus what you want in the moment.

    - Don't make the phrase "it is what it is" a life sentence.

    Tips + Takeaways:

    1. Think big but start small. Don't try and full plate every aspect of your life at once. You'll get overwhelmed and quit.

    2. Ask yourself, "Am I accepting crumbs or is this the plate I'm happy with?" In non-food terms (LOL) Am I settling or happy with what this "thing" I've chosen?

    3. Choose your "plate" based on your flavors, not what somebody else is putting on me?"
