Show Notes: 11 Things Great Speakers Do Differently #10 - Understanding GRIT

Grit is NOT just having a Suck It Up Buttercup, grind-it-out mentality.

According to Angela Duckworth, author of GRIT: The Power of Passion and Perseverance, there are two sides to grit:

    • Passion and Direction
    • Perseverance and Determination

I highly recommend Angela Duckworth's book GRIT: https://amzn.to/42A4zIv

Show Notes: 11 Things Great Speakers Do Differently #9 - How You View YOU

One of the most attractive character traits of a great speaker or leader is humble confidence.

    • Someone who is confident, but not cocky
    • Someone who is humble, but does not have an "aw-shucks" attitude

The best speakers are Experts who also view themselves as Fellow Travelers.

Always remember that you as the speaker are one small (but important) part of an event. If you are easy to work with, you make the Decision Maker and Meeting Planner's jobs easier.

Ways to be easy to work with:

    • Keep your Speaker Agreement and Rider simple
    • Keep your fee structure simple
    • Gather all the information you need from Meeting Planners in one Intake Form
    • Anticipate what needs to be communicated with Meeting Planners and when it needs to be communicated

Show Notes: 11 Things Great Speakers Do Differently #7 - Only Ask For Business IF You Are a Good Fit

This strategy might seem counterintuitive, but in the long run, it is better to turn down an engagement that is not a good fit for you rather than lie and pretend it is a good fit.

When you are honest about what you speak about and how you best serve clients, you will often discover the organization:

    • Has other opportunities for you that are a better fit
    • Will invite you to speak the following year
    • Will refer you to other organizations

If you are not a good fit for an engagement, a great way to serve the organization is to recommend another speaker who is a better fit.

Show Notes: 11 Things Great Speakers Do Differently #6 - Serve Before Selling

    Decision-Makers buy from people they:

    • Know
    • Like (aka—respect)
    • Trust

However, most speakers have the attitude of Always Be Selling, so they come out of the gate selling.

Great speakers, on the other hand, do things differently.

Great speakers serve before trying to sell:

    • They serve first, second, third, fourth, fifth, etc.
    • They "court" before asking for a "commitment"

    • Yourself?
    • An Actor?
    • Or a little bit of both?

Whatever the case is for you, it is important to realize that to be a great speaker, you must step INTO CHARACTER before you hit the stage.
