    I would put out a blog, speak publicly or network only when I felt confident. Then I would coast waiting for clients to come to me.

    Take it from me, if you only show up when you feel inspired, no one will take you seriously. Your future clients need to sense your consistent presence in the marketplace or they will follow and hire someone else.

    I’ve spent much of my life getting in my own way — believing I wasn’t good enough or couldn’t do it — whatever “it” was at the time. You too?

    I’d like to travel back in time to my younger self and show her all that I have accomplished in life so she knows she is enough and she can do it!

    I’m lucky that I have a strong will and I’m a problem solver. I go after what I want with fierce determination.

    But hampered by negative self-talk, that was like putting the gas pedal to the floor with the emergency break on. So much energy wasted!

    Now I’ve learned how to regulate my nervous system and align my thinking to my goals.

    It’s not automatic.

    I have to slow down in order to notice how I’m getting in my own way then shift my mindset so I can move forward with ease. It’s a daily mindfulness practice.

    Let’s talk about how to generate positive self-talk so you can more easily reach coaching success.

    When I first started my coaching business, I was perplexed why I wasn’t earning well or working with many paying clients. I was seriously contemplating quitting even though I’d put so much time and money into this.

    I reached out to my previous mentor and complained that I wasn’t getting the results I hoped for from my efforts. If I’m honest, somewhere in my brain I was secretly blaming her for my lack of results.

    She asked, “Well, what exactly have you been doing for the last 6 months to enroll clients?”

    She did NOT ask “How many posts have you done on socials?” or “How many emails have you sent out about your business?”

    Her question was smart and very specific – what had I done to ENROLL clients.

    My answer … NOT A SINGLE THING! Busted!

    You know that open ended questions are the most potent tool for coaching sessions.

    A single powerful question can evoke a positive shift in clients. Learning how to frame those questions in the moment is an art every coach can learn.

    But session time isn’t the only time that powerful questions help you and your client.

    It makes sense to ask them in:

    1. The copy on your website.

    2. Social posts.

    3. Other content like videos, blogs and podcast episodes.

    4. Keynote talks and webinars.

    5. Discovery calls.

    … even in an intake document your client fills out and sends you before your first session.

    I started sending 10 BIG QUESTIONS as part of my on-boarding process over a decade ago and I love how my new client’s answers clue me in about how to serve them best.

    Sometimes, I’m surprised that I ever enrolled a coaching client in my first few years as a coach!

    I was out there in front of my audience both online and offline. I had a weekly newsletter with a growing list of subscribers. I did public speaking. I hustled.

    But for years I never directly invited anyone to hire me.

    That seemed too pushy.

    I stubbornly believed it’s enough to show up everyday and share my thought leadership. But too few hired me on that alone.
