• Get proactive and swim
    2023/08/01

TOO MANY MEN IN CONSTRUCTION AREN’T PROACTIVE ENOUGH WHEN IT COMES TO SORTING THEMSELVES OUT.

I love using the analogy of a rescue swimmer, dropping in the ocean when a yacht has capsized.

It’s common knowledge that the strong swimmer will swim towards those that are swimming towards him. That’s because those people have the energy, effort, and intent to be rescued.

If we apply that to men in construction who are currently struggling with coping mechanisms, it is simply not enough to say you have a problem and then do nothing about it.

I know what that feels like having been an alcoholic for 20+ years in construction. To say I needed to be a better man, father and husband.

To see the negative impact it was having on my life and the debilitating effect on my self-confidence. Saying that with no follow through action was soul destroying.

I had to get proactive and swim towards being the better man I knew I could be.

If you are currently struggling with a coping mechanism, you have to get proactive and swim towards the better version of yourself.

Overtime this compounding affect can literally change who you are and the life course you’re currently on.

  • Feeling disconnected to those I love
    2023/07/27

Having spent 20 years as an alcoholic in construction I know firsthand the feeling of disconnection to those you love.

The nature of the construction “beast” lends itself to setting tens of thousands of men up for this dark space of being disconnected to the most important people in their lives.

If you are currently in this situation please understand you’re not alone although it feels lonely. Also take heart that you can turn this situation around with some very simple steps.

  • Do men need to cry more?
    2022/10/03

There is a huge push for men to show their emotions more by shedding tears or crying. Articles say that this is a sign of men in touch with their emotions or inner child. Feminism is also being pushed on men to deal with their problems more like women.

Men are men. Women are women. 2 different species people.

I don't really cry. Never have. Neither did my old man before me besides 2 occassions. He was still in touch with his emotions as anyoe would tell you who met him.

The notion that he needed to cry more around his 6 kids? What a joke!

I work in the frontline of men in construction. Hard men that carry the weight of the world on their shoulders. The majority don't cry and never will but they read these articles and wonder is there something wrong with them?

    NO.

Be you boys. Just make sure you have a constructive way of dealing with your emotions which ipacts your mental state. For me its training every morning with DRAFT 72.

    https://draft72.com/home-9075

Don't think that because you don't cry you are not in touch with your emotions. Don't think that because you'd rather roll your sleeves up and sort out a problem then shed tears and talk about it you are wrong.

The world needs strong men now more than ever. When I think of what my dad and grandad had to endure it makes me proud they were who they were.

Get a daily routine going boys to work on you. Make sure the home is a safe haven for the family. Listen to your wife and make decisions together. Listen and nuture your children. Protect your kingdoms.

  • Talk is cheap.
    2022/09/10

Many of us were brought up with old saying like "Talk is cheap" and "Actions speak louder than words".

Get these into your life men.

Talking about change doesn't bring change.

Repeatedley not doing what you say makes you inauthentic, hypocritical and wires your brain for failure.

I have presented around the world with various worldclass speakers on topics from fitness to culture, connection, ethics and the human touch. So many of them were fake.

They simple were good speakers that engaged a crowd with whymsical words.

Telling yourself is a great way to start but you need to START. And then keep going. There is no magic formula boys. Its routine and consistency that is at the heart of regaining control of whatever area of your life that needs it.

    Enough talk. Get it!

  • Top of the priority list
    2022/09/07

This testimonial is from a site supervisor for one of the companies I am consulting for with my DRAFT 72 program.

To understand someone you need to listen to what they're saying and with empathy and compassion you can create the context to their words.

Thousands of men in construction in Australia currently feel trapped running through the motions struggling to maintain themselves with the burden they hold.

There is another way boys. Listen in and start to apply what you are learning.

  • Stop using "Family first" as an excuse boys.
    2022/09/04

When I was an alcoholic for 20 years you would hear me say "family first" all the time.

It is a saying men in construction are proud of. Unfortunately, the truth of the matter is they are only referring to the "material needs" of their family.

You see if I ask them how other areas of their life is going most will say "not great". If I ask if they're happy with the version they are giving their wives and kids, many men stay silent too ashamed to speak.

    What does it mean?

I was using "family first" unknowingly as an excuse to continue on a path of self-destruction being an alcoholic.

I would plant that flag in the ground and swear allegiance to it while I during myself to death knowing I was losing my marriage and family.

    How shit is that?

Boys, putting our loved ones first is our duty and a privilege. It is not an excuse to hide behind while we continue on a path into darkness.

Listen in fellas and follow some practical steps to create some breathing space.

You are worth it. You are not alone.

  • Why new habits always fail.
    2022/09/02

The media has lied to men in construction. They make claims like:

"7 best habits in your life to turn it around!"

"The top 3 habits that will make you a winner!"

"Habits successful men use for relationship heaven!"

    Or whatever bullshit they claim.

Unfortunately, tens of thousands of men in construction currently trapped with coping mechanisms of alcohol, drugs, gambling or on the brink of marriage breakdowns, family problems, overweight issues, low self-esteem and self-worth are eating this garbage up.

These things don't work boys and it's all to do with the headlines. When they mention the word "habit" your brain automatically tells you that "this will be easy. After all isn't a "habit" like being on autopilot?

The answer is yes. That's exactly what a habit is like turning on the tap to brush your teeth. The problem is to change any of the issues above requires you to be in charge of your plane or ship.

It requires you to be present. It demands you roll your sleeves up and get dirty. Do you honestly think I came out of a 20-year dark hole of being an alcoholic in construction by mindless habits?

    Of course, I didn't.

So what's the key to start directing your life where it needs to go?

    Routines.

You are looking to set up and consistently maintain good routines. A routine requires energy and effort. That is the actual definition of a routine.

Now apply that word and its rich meaning to the problems mentioned above. See how well it fits?

Listen in as I give you 2 routines to start to build into your daily life to create some breathing space. This in turn creates positive thoughts. Remember boys, where focus goes, energy flows.
