Rege recovered from a heart ailment to return to lead Mumbai. After retiring early in quest of a prospering corporate career, Rege thrived as a selector. He spotted a talent as progious as his childhood friend Sunil Gavaskar in Sachin Tendulkar and convinced his selection committee seniors to pick Tendulkar in the Ranji Trophy squad.
