• 206- Your Pain Is Talking // Should I Push Through This? And How to Respond When Movement Hurts
    2026/08/26
What do you do when your body says, “Ouch”? Do you immediately stop because you're afraid something is wrong? Or do you ignore it, push through, and hope it goes away? Pain can feel scary and confusing—especially when you're trying to heal, get stronger, or return to activities you love. But pain isn't always a simple stop sign. Pain is communication. And communication needs interpretation. In this episode, we're talking about shifting the way we respond to pain. Instead of immediately fearing it or ignoring it, what if we learned to get curious about what our bodies are trying to tell us? Because listening to your body doesn't always mean stopping. Sometimes it means adjusting. Sometimes it means resting. Sometimes it means getting help. And sometimes it means realizing you're okay to keep going. In This Episode We Explore Why we tend to either fear pain or ignore it Why pain doesn't always equal damage How factors beyond an injury can influence the pain experience Why the behavior of your pain can give you useful information Questions to ask yourself when something hurts The difference between normal exercise challenge and ignoring your body's signals A simple green-light, yellow-light, red-light way to think about symptoms How modifying a movement can help you learn more about what your body needs Why connection and body awareness can build confidence instead of fear Why This Matters When something hurts, it's easy to immediately think: “Something is wrong.” But it's also easy to swing too far in the opposite direction and decide: “I'll just push through it.” Neither response leaves much room for listening. Learning to pay attention to what you're feeling, when you're feeling it, how long it lasts, and what changes it can help you make more intentional decisions about movement. The goal isn't to become afraid of every sensation. And it isn't to ignore your body's signals in the name of getting stronger. It's learning the difference between challenging your body and ignoring your body. The Big Takeaway The next time something hurts during movement, instead of immediately asking: “Is this bad?” Try asking: “What is my body asking me to notice right now?” Then: Pause. Notice. Adjust. Reassess. Maybe your body needs you to change the range, load, speed, position, or breath. Maybe it needs recovery. Maybe it needs professional evaluation. Or maybe after checking in, you realize you're okay to continue. Listening doesn't always mean stopping. It means responding. And the better you become at listening, the more confidently you can make decisions about your body. Ready to Understand the Bigger Picture? If you've been listening to the last few episodes, you're probably noticing a theme: I don't want you endlessly searching for someone to give you the perfect exercise. I want you to understand the body you're actually living in. That's a huge reason I created Healing Beyond Kegels. Pelvic floor symptoms aren't simply problems we throw exercises at. Your breath, pressure, core, movement, strength, stress, nervous system, and the rest of your body are all part of the conversation. Healing Beyond Kegels is designed to help you zoom out, connect those dots, and start understanding your body differently. It's coming soon, and I can't wait to share it with you. Until then, remember: Connection first. Intention over perfection. 💛 This episode is for general education and isn't a substitute for individualized medical care. New, severe, rapidly worsening, or otherwise concerning pain should be evaluated by an appropriate healthcare professional. Want More Support? • 205- Why I Told My Patient I Didn't Care What Exercise She Did And What I Cared About More to Stop Her Leaking
    2026/08/19
What if finding the “perfect” exercise isn't actually the thing that moves you forward? I recently told a patient that I didn't really care what exercise she did—which probably sounds like a strange thing to hear from a physical therapist! But what I meant was that I cared far less about choosing the perfect exercise and far more about what was happening in her body while she was doing it. In this episode, we're talking about why two people can do the exact same exercise and have completely different experiences—and why learning to notice your breath, pressure, tension, symptoms, and overall connection can be more valuable than constantly searching for the “right” movement. Because the goal isn't perfect exercise. It's learning how to move with intention, awareness, and confidence. In This Episode We Explore Why I told a patient I didn't care what exercise she chose Why we get so caught up searching for the “best” pelvic floor or core exercise How the same movement can look completely different inside two different bodies What I'm actually paying attention to when I watch a patient move The relationship between breath, pressure, tension, symptoms, and movement Why intention over perfection matters How awareness helps you make better decisions about your body Why learning to listen to your body can ultimately build confidence and trust A simple way to approach an exercise you're already doing differently this week Why This Matters When you're dealing with leaking, pelvic pressure, pain, core weakness, or simply trying to get stronger, it's easy to believe there's a specific exercise you're missing. But healing isn't about collecting more exercises. It's about understanding you. When you learn to notice how your body responds during movement, you can begin making adjustments instead of immediately assuming an exercise is “good” or “bad.” And over time, that awareness can help you move away from fear and toward something much more powerful: trusting yourself to move. Ready to Understand the Bigger Picture? This connection-first approach is one of the reasons I created Healing Beyond Kegels. Pelvic floor healing isn't just about finding the right Kegel, core exercise, or stretch. Your breath, core, pelvic floor, pressure, movement patterns, nervous system, and the rest of your body are all part of the conversation. Healing Beyond Kegels will help you zoom out and understand how those pieces work together—so you can stop chasing random exercises and start making sense of what your body is actually telling you. 2026/08/14
Have you noticed your bladder, core, or pelvic floor changing during perimenopause or menopause? Maybe you're experiencing leaking, urgency, heaviness, discomfort, or feeling like your body just doesn't respond the way it used to. If so, you're not alone—and you're certainly not broken. In today's episode, we're talking about what actually happens to the pelvic floor during perimenopause and menopause, why these changes occur, and most importantly, what you can do to continue feeling strong, confident, and supported through this new season of life. In This Episode, We Explore: What happens to your body during perimenopause and menopause How hormonal changes affect your pelvic floor, core, and bladder Common symptoms women experience during midlife The biggest misconceptions about pelvic floor health after menopause Practical ways to support your body through strength, movement, nutrition, and recovery Why it's never too late to improve your pelvic floor health Why This Matters Many women assume leaking, pelvic pressure, or pain are simply "part of getting older." While hormonal changes absolutely influence our tissues and muscles, they don't mean you have to accept symptoms as your new normal. Understanding what's happening inside your body empowers you to make intentional choices that support long-term strength, function, and confidence. Big Takeaway Menopause isn't the end of your strength—it's the beginning of a new chapter. Your body may need a different approach than it did in your 20s or 30s, but healing, strength, and confidence are absolutely still possible. Small, intentional habits can make a tremendous difference in how you feel during this season of life. • 203- Feeling Like a Bum This Summer? Here's How to Reconnect and Get Back on Track Without Starting Over
    2026/08/05
Has summer completely thrown off your routine? Between vacations, busy schedules, kids being home, and all the fun (and chaos!) that comes with this season, it's easy to feel like you've fallen behind on your health goals. If you've been feeling guilty, unmotivated, or like you're starting over, this episode is for you. Today, we're shifting the conversation from "getting back on track" to reconnecting with your body through small, intentional steps that build lasting momentum. In This Episode, We Explore: Why summer doesn't erase your progress The difference between restarting and reconnecting How guilt and perfectionism keep us feeling stuck Why small, intentional habits create bigger results than all-or-nothing thinking Simple ways to reconnect with your body after a busy season How to build momentum without overwhelm Why This Matters So many women believe they've "failed" because life got busy or their routine changed. But healing, fitness, and health aren't about being perfect—they're about learning how to return to yourself again and again. Your body hasn't forgotten everything you've worked for. With the right mindset and a few intentional steps, you can rebuild consistency with confidence instead of guilt. Big Takeaway You don't need to start over—you simply need to reconnect. One intentional choice today is far more powerful than waiting for the "perfect" Monday. Your body isn't asking for perfection. It's asking for consistency, compassion, and connection. • 202- Summer End Up Chaotic? How to End With More Regulation, Connection & Fun Without a Perfect Schedule
    2026/07/29
Did anyone else start summer with good intentions and then suddenly realize things felt a little chaotic? Between camps, vacations, changing schedules, kids being home more often, and trying to juggle work, family, and self-care, summer can quickly become overwhelming. While many of us crave structure, the reality is that summer rarely follows a perfectly organized schedule. The good news? Your nervous system doesn't need perfection. It needs predictability. In this episode, Dr. Des shares practical ways to create more regulation, connection, and enjoyment during the summer months without relying on rigid routines or unrealistic expectations. We'll discuss why summer can feel dysregulating, how flexible rhythms can support both parents and children, and simple ways to create more calm and fun in everyday life. In This Episode, We Explore: ☀️ Why summer can feel surprisingly overwhelming ☀️ How changes in routine impact the nervous system ☀️ The difference between rigid schedules and flexible rhythms ☀️ Why predictability helps children and adults feel more regulated ☀️ How overstimulation and mental load affect moms ☀️ Simple "anchor points" that can bring more calm to your day ☀️ The connection between nervous system regulation and pelvic floor health ☀️ Why fun, play, and connection matter for overall well-being ☀️ Practical ways to support yourself during a busy season Why This Matters When life feels chaotic, our bodies often respond by holding more tension, breathing more shallowly, sleeping less, and feeling more overwhelmed. This can impact everything from energy levels and stress management to pelvic floor symptoms and overall health. Creating small moments of predictability and connection can help support both physical and emotional well-being throughout the summer months. The Big Takeaway Your family doesn't need a perfect summer. They need a connected, present, and regulated version of you. Instead of chasing the perfect schedule, focus on creating simple rhythms that support your nervous system and leave room for spontaneity, fun, and meaningful connection. 🎉 Celebrating 200 Episodes! • 201- The Hidden Connection Between POTS, MCAS, Hypermobility, Pelvic Venous Disorder & Pelvic Floor Dysfunction
    2026/07/21
Have you ever felt like your symptoms are all over the place? Dizziness when standing. Racing heart. Pelvic pain. Bladder issues. Digestive symptoms. Fatigue. Pelvic pressure. Anxiety-like symptoms. What if these seemingly unrelated symptoms were actually connected? In this episode, Dr. Des explores the growing recognition of the relationship between Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS), Pelvic Venous Disorder (PeVD), hypermobility, and pelvic floor dysfunction. While these conditions are often treated separately, many women experience overlapping symptoms that can leave them feeling frustrated, dismissed, and searching for answers. We'll discuss how connective tissue, the nervous system, circulation, and pelvic floor function may all play a role in the bigger picture—and why a whole-body approach is often essential for lasting improvement. Whether you've been diagnosed with one of these conditions, suspect you may be dealing with symptoms, or simply want to better understand your body, this episode is packed with valuable information and validation. In This Episode, We Explore: 💛 What POTS is and common symptoms associated with dysautonomia 💛 What MCAS is and how mast cells affect multiple body systems 💛 What Pelvic Venous Disorder (PeVD) is and why it is often overlooked 💛 The role connective tissue and hypermobility may play 💛 Why pelvic floor symptoms are so common in these populations 💛 The connection between circulation, pressure management, and pelvic health 💛 Why strengthening alone isn't always the answer 💛 How nervous system regulation and whole-body care can support recovery 💛 When it may be appropriate to seek additional evaluation or support Why This Matters Many women spend years trying to piece together symptoms that seem unrelated. Unfortunately, many are told their symptoms are "just stress" or "just anxiety" without receiving a full explanation of what may be happening in their bodies. Understanding the connections between these conditions can help women feel validated, empowered, and better equipped to advocate for their health. The Big Takeaway Your symptoms may not be random. Sometimes they're clues pointing toward a bigger picture. When we begin looking at the body as an interconnected system rather than isolated parts, we often uncover opportunities for healing, support, and better symptom management. 🎉 Celebrating 200 Episodes! The Pelvic Floor, Core & More Podcast is approaching its 200th episode, and I couldn't be more grateful for this amazing community. • 200- Hypermobility & Pelvic Floor Issues // Why Being Flexible Isn't Always an Advantage
    2026/07/10
Have you always been the "flexible" one? And/Or Do you have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (EDS)? Can you easily touch your palms to the floor, bend into unusual positions, or feel like your joints are extra loose? While flexibility is often seen as a good thing, hypermobility can come with its own unique challenges—especially when it comes to pelvic floor health, core stability, pregnancy, postpartum recovery, and chronic pain. In this episode, Dr. Des explores the often-overlooked connection between hypermobility and pelvic floor dysfunction, why many hypermobile women experience symptoms such as leaking, prolapse, pelvic pain, and instability, and what they can do to better support their bodies. If you've ever felt like you're constantly stretching but still feel tight, this episode may explain why. In This Episode, We Explore: 🦓 What hypermobility actually is 🦓 Why hypermobility is more common in women 🦓 Common symptoms associated with hypermobility 🦓 The connection between hypermobility and pelvic floor dysfunction 🦓 Why hypermobile people often feel tight despite being flexible 🦓 Why stretching isn't always the answer 🦓 How strength, stability, and coordination support hypermobile bodies 🦓 Practical strategies for improving pelvic floor and core function Why This Matters Many hypermobile women spend years feeling confused about their symptoms. They may be told to stretch more, do more yoga, or simply accept discomfort as normal. But hypermobility often requires a different approach. Building strength, improving joint stability, enhancing body awareness, and learning how to manage load can make a significant difference in symptoms and overall function. The Big Takeaway You can be both flexible and tight at the same time. For many hypermobile women, the answer isn't more stretching—it's more support. Your body isn't broken. It may simply need a different strategy. 🎉 Celebrating 200 Episodes! • 199- Returning to Running Postpartum // When Is It Safe & How Do You Know You're Ready?
    2026/07/01
One of the most common questions new moms ask is: "When can I start running again after having a baby?" The answer isn't always as simple as being cleared at your six-week postpartum appointment. Running places significant demands on your pelvic floor, core, hips, and entire body. While many women are eager to return to the activities they love, returning too quickly—or without a plan—can contribute to symptoms such as leaking, pelvic pressure, heaviness, pain, or feelings of instability. In this episode, Dr. Des breaks down what postpartum women should consider before returning to running, common signs your body may need more preparation, and practical strategies to help you return safely and confidently. Whether you're six weeks postpartum, six months postpartum, or several years postpartum and still struggling with symptoms while running, this episode is for you. In This Episode, We Explore: 🏃‍♀️ Why running is more demanding than many women realize 🏃‍♀️ Why "cleared" doesn't always mean "ready" 🏃‍♀️ Common signs your body may need more preparation before running 🏃‍♀️ Pelvic floor symptoms to watch for 🏃‍♀️ Strength and movement benchmarks before returning to impact 🏃‍♀️ How to safely progress back into running 🏃‍♀️ The role of core, glute, and pelvic floor strength 🏃‍♀️ Common mistakes women make when returning to running postpartum Why This Matters Returning to running is not simply about waiting for tissues to heal. It's about rebuilding strength, pressure management, endurance, coordination, and impact tolerance. A thoughtful progression can help reduce symptoms, build confidence, and create a stronger foundation for long-term success. The Big Takeaway Your body isn't behind. You don't need to rush. Running is a progression—not a milestone. With the right preparation and support, you can return to running feeling strong, confident, and connected to your body. Need Support?
