Continuing her sixteenth year coaching rowing, Coach Dampeer continues to build a strong development program for rowing in the United States. Since 2010, Dampeer has coached various national team athletes at the Olympic Games, Senior U23 and U19 World Championships, Pan American Games, and World Cups. All of her success is no accident. She continues to develop training programs, technical coaching ability, and has become an all-around expert at innovating and integrating emerging science in rowing.     www.GoodAthleteProject.com Today, Jim sits down with Dean Tolson, a former NBA professional basketball player and motivational speaker. He began his life in the ghettos of Kansas City, Missouri. As a promising young high school basketball player, despite being illiterate, he went on to play for the University of Arkansas where during this time, he also served in the U.S. Army and continued his education. Dean’s dream of playing professional basketball was realized when he was drafted by the Seattle SuperSonics. After 3 years in the NBA and playing overseas for 11 years, Dean returned to Arkansas to pursue a degree in History and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a master’s degree in Education. In his book, “Power Forward”, Dean shares his experiences and the importance of pursuing an education and reaching for your goals.   • Episode 158- Kelly Gunther: 2014 USA Speed Skating Olympian

    www.GoodAthleteProject.com Today, Jim sits down with Kelly Gunther, a 2014 US Olympian in speed skating. At the age of 6, Kelly knew she wanted to be an Olympian when she saw others take the ice. She briefly took up figure skating before taking up in-line speed skating because she wanted to move faster than the music allowed. As an inline skater, she won multiple World Championship gold medals on the US relay team before transitioning to ice speed skating in 2009. It was the perfect fit. While this was the start of Kelly’s road to becoming an Olympian, she could have never predicted the obstacles that came her way. Despite having a learning disability as a student, facing setbacks in her skating career, and nearly losing her entire foot on the ice in a double compound fracture, Kelly found a way to come back each time - earning her the nickname, “The Comeback Kid.” Her story is one of incredible resiliency and determination. She is a multiple-time American record holder, a five-time consecutive American National Open champion, and is in the New England Weightlifting Hall of Fame. Carissa has spent her life in sport whether it be as an athlete, advocate, or as an executive leader. She currently serves as the Executive Director* for the National Strength and Conditioning Association, the NSCA, and is the founder of Lifting You Up, L.L.C., which is focused on supporting nonprofits at the policy and process level to help advance their respective mission.     www.GoodAthleteProject.com Today, Jim sits down with Pat Williams, a basketball Hall-of-Famer, former general manager of the Philadelphia 76ers, and co-founder of the NBA’s Orlando Magic. He’s also been the general manager with NBA teams in Chicago, Philadelphia, Atlanta, and Orlando, including the 1983 World Champion 76ers. He’s also beaten an incurable form of cancer, Multiple Myeloma, and has since kept a clean bill of health. Additionally, as the father of 19 children, 14 of them adopted, he continues to be a strong influence within the family. On top of all of that, he’s an author who’s written over a hundred books and an incredible leader, coach, and mentor that anyone would be lucky to learn from. Nina studies the biology of auditory learning at Brainvolts Auditory Neuroscience Lab at Northwestern University.     GoodAthleteProject.com This week, we’re joined by Jake Flint, the Director of Athletic Development at LSU. Prior to LSU, Flint spent 12 years at Notre Dame on the strength and conditioning staff. During this time, he helped Notre Dame compete in 11 bowl games, 2 College Football Playoffs, and the BCS National Championship Game. Flint is also a certified CSCCA and USAW strength coach and trained over 60 players who went on to be selected in the NFL draft. In addition to being an incredible coach, he’s also played for Central Michigan University and represented USA Weightlifting in the 85 kg weight class.
