    Phil Brooke is headteacher at Alexandra Park Primary School in Stockport, and a former SLE and NCETM Mastery Lead. Alexandra Park is rated Outstanding by Ofsted, which notes that the school “is very well led and managed.”


    We talk to Phil about teaching in a deprived area, having a focus on teaching and learning and his determination to make sure the children under his care don’t struggle as he once did.

    Bruno Reddy is a maths educationalist with a background in psychology, who is now CEO of Maths Circle. He is the creator of Times Tables Rock Stars and NumBots, edtech platforms designed to boost maths confidence for life.


    An early adopter of teaching for mastery, Bruno has supported a number of school trusts with their maths teaching, acted as adviser to the DfE and was a founding teacher and senior leader at King Solomon Academy, a mould-breaking school recognised for exceptional outcomes in a deprived area of London.

  • E07 - Headteacher and deputy of a research school in a deprived inner-city area: You need to implement this approach in your school!

    Sonia Thompson is headteacher/director at St Matthew’s Research School. She is a Specialist Leader of Education and a Talk for Writing Lead Trainer. Sonia is especially passionate about evidence-based reading for pleasure practices.


    Sonia is also the author of ‘Berger's An Ethic of Excellence in Action’, a thorough analysis of Ron Berger’s original Ethic of Excellence toolkit strategies, written with his support and guidance. The book shows what excellence looks like in the real world.


    Tracey Adams has been a teacher for 26 years and is deputy head at St Matthew’s Research School in Birmingham. St Matthew’s is part of the Research School Network, and aims “to share the very best evidence-based practice with schools and teachers across the West Midlands through evidence-based training.”


    Tracey is a NCETM Teaching for Mastery Specialist and Professional Development Lead. She is passionate about educational research and changing children’s lives through better teaching.

    Chris Dyson is the former headteacher of Parklands Primary school in Leeds, located in one of Europe’s largest council estates. Here, he was a National Leader of Education (NLE), helping to drive improvements across Yorkshire. Seeing schools achieve sustained improvement is his abiding passion.


    In January this year Chris moved to Birmingham, to take up the role of deputy CEO of the Create Partnership Trust, an organisation responsible for the education of 3,000 children. His strength is in changing the culture in school environments through prioritising the wellbeing of both teachers and children.

    Professor Nira Chamberlain OBE is one of the UK’s most eminent mathematicians, President of the Mathematical Association and former President of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications. In 2018 he was named the World's Most Interesting Mathematician.


    We could go on, but suffice to say that Professor Chamberlain is passionate about maths, its teaching and its application. He has over 30 years of experience at writing mathematical algorithms that solve complex industrial problems and five - yes, five - mathematical doctorates.
