  • The Strong Black Woman Syndrome: Unpacking Mental Health Challenges for Black Women
    2023/06/17
In today's episode I discuss an article that discussed the mental health paradox for black women. It is also known as the "Strong Black Woman Syndrome" The mental health paradox is the issue where distressed black women who need mental health services the most are the least likely to receive them. This is due to factors such as lack of affordable healthcare, culturally incompetent mental health professionals, and mental health stigma in the black community. To address this problem, raising awareness, providing culturally competent mental health professionals, and offering community outreach programs and mental health education is essential. Supporting distressed black women and helping them learn coping skills and strategies is crucial, and it's important to dispel the idea that they must suffer in silence.
