The book is the first part of an expansion of the story Lady Susan by Jane Austen. This edition relays events leading up to Lady Susan Vernon's first letter. She rides out with Mainwaring, her lover, to see the estate of Sir James Martin, and decides to pursue this gentleman on behalf of her daughter Frederica as an eligible match for her.

Lady Susan is at Churchill, the home of her brother-in-law and his wife and family. Her reputation as a coquette has not been aided by her flirtation with Reginald de Courcy. Lady Susan attempts to further her plans to induce Frederica into marrying Sir James Martin, a nobleman, but Frederica's obvious distaste of the match is a cause for further disruption.
