Non-musical history for today: 1336 – Four thousand defenders of Pilenai committed mass suicide rather than be taken captive by the Teutonic Knights. No one really knows for sure where the hill fort of Pilenai actually is, and while it is supposedly real, its obscurity is fodder for tall tales and legends. However, it is just another example of religious zealots imposing their will against those who are or believe differently than they do. Non-musical history for today: 1876 – The stage première of Peer Gynt, a play by Henrik Ibsen with incidental music by Edvard Grieg, takes place in Christiania (Oslo), Norway. I have always wished I had the stones to have a beard like Henrik Ibsen. If you're not familiar... look him up. Music history, album anniversaries, birthdays, and deaths for February 24. Non-musical history for today: 1903 – Cuba leased Guantánamo Bay to the United States "in perpetuity." I wondered how we could have a military base in Cuba when we can't go to Cuba and Cuba probably wants us out. What do they get in the lease? It's an annual ration of gold. All the numbers I could find was that in 1974, it was about $4000 a year. I'm surprised that Cuba hasn't tried (harder) to get out of the deal. Especially now. Non-musical history for today: 1997 – In Roslin, Midlothian, Scotland, British scientists announced that an adult sheep named Dolly had been successfully cloned. Roslin (or Rosslyn) is about 5 miles from the castle (Dalhousie Castle) where Stephanie and I married. Music history, album anniversaries, birthdays, and deaths for February 22. Non-musical history for today: 1872 – The Metropolitan Museum of Art opened in New York City. It is the most-visited museum in the United States and the fifth-most visited art museum in the world after the Louvre (I've touched), Vatican Museums, The National Museum of China, and the British Museum (which I have stood in the courtyard of). And, while this is supposed to be "non-musical," I find it cool that two famous music pieces, Rossini's opera The Barber of Seville (1816) and Tchaikovsky's ballet Swan Lake (1877), both premiered on this date. Non-musical history for today: 1945 – About 30,000 United States Marines landed on the island of Iwo Jima to start the battle of Iwo Jima. That battle went on for around five weeks. The Japanese Army positions on the island were heavily fortified, with a dense network of bunkers, hidden artillery positions, and a shload of tunnels. The American ground forces were supported by extensive naval artillery and had complete air supremacy provided by U.S. Navy and Marine Corps aviators throughout the battle. An anomaly of war, the American casualties were 3-to-1 compared to that of the Japanese. Yet, persistence and attrition finally won out.
