    The recipe for survival is keeping up with the times

    At the beginning, our newborn Association went through a period whose first goal was to reach out to Belluno workers scattered around the world. Often, news was scarce, and communication methods were certainly not what they are today. We relied on word of mouth and on the few bits of information collected in the countries of origin through family members, parish priests, and mayors. To the people we met, we appeared as a novelty, often relying on various Italian organizations: : Donatori di sangue, Alpini, Missione cattolica, Acli, Colonie Libere and so on. In those emigration countries, our fellow citizens had somehow organized themselves, staying, so to speak, "attached" to their village of origin, sometimes only through the long-awaited parish bulletin. The luckiest would occasionally receive a personal visit from the parish priest, allowing them to breathe the air of home for a few days. On this foundation, all invented by our "pioneers," the body of the Belluno Emigrants Association began to take shape and grow, later becoming "Bellunesi nel Mondo." By the end of the last century, it had already become an important and respected reality within the vast network of emigration associations in our country. Then, the inexorable law of life began to present us with the bill, and many "Belluno Families" started to dwindle, some eventually disappearing. Could we continue on a path that no longer offered hope, especially in some countries of old Europe? No, we had to look beyond the ocean and turn our eyes and ears toward Belluno communities that had remained almost unknown for a long time but were beginning to make their presence felt, thus invigorating the body of our Association. This process seems unstoppable. In fact, recently, Gioia Sacchet, from the ABM Eboard, and President Oscar De Bona, handed over the banner to the new "Family" in Pedras Grandes and to the new president of the Florianopolis one, both in the state of Santa Catarina. In other places, the bonds of twinning were strengthened with Massaranduba (still in the state of Santa Catarina), thanks to the presence of our councilor Luca Luchetta, and with Serra Gaucha (in the state of Rio Grande do Sul), visited by our councilor Rino Budel. All this shows that, in these times, it is easy to draw new life force from constant human encounters, also facilitated by communication tools unimaginable at the beginning of the AEB-ABM's history. Think of the website, Radio ABM, the Museum of Migrations, and so on. The discovery of common origins seems to bring the shores of the oceans closer together. This is demonstrated by the example of Bakhita Mbake Ngomba Nanyongo, 22, a student of the Degree Course in Arts, Music, and Entertainment Disciplines (DAMS) at the University of Padua, who chose to do a three-week internship at our Association: "I chose to carry out my internship at ABM because I believe in the importance of community and creating bonds with people with whom you can share both similar and different experiences." Born in Belluno to Cameroonian parents, Bakhita knows well the value of cultural exchange and decided to put it into practice. From all of this, it can be inferred that today, despite wars and violated rights, opening up to ever-new exchanges between people can offer hope, preventing us from being swept away by the chaos of a society in disarray.

    2025 is at risk of being a year with few elections. In fact, it has not yet been decided what the fate of the regional elections will be. The last ones were held in September 2020, in the midst of the pandemic, when voters in a handful of Belluno municipalities also went to the polls to renew their administrations. So far, the government has made a decision only for these municipalities, six in total in the province of Belluno, granting them an extension until the spring of 2026. The 2020 elections were held in September due to COVID-related issues, and a decree was required to move the usual spring election date. Therefore, the mayors of Colle Santa Lucia, Vodo di Cadore, Borca di Cadore, Valle di Cadore, Zoppè, and Gosaldo will remain in office for another year. A quick round of phone calls reveals that the mayors involved haven’t yet thought about what to do in a year, except for Marianna Hofer, the mayor of Valle di Cadore. "Five years as mayor are too few, ten are right, fifteen are too many," she said. Meanwhile, the mayors of Vodo, Domenico Belfi, and Borca, Bortolo Sala, haven’t yet made a decision. The two municipalities in the Boite Valley have many projects in common, such as the combined kindergarten and primary school in Vodo, or the bike path that runs through the entire valley, which constantly needs investment and maintenance. Belfi has already served two terms as mayor, followed by five years as a councilor, then another ten as mayor, bringing the total to 11 years due to the extension granted. Sala is on his third term as mayor. The problem, the mayors explain, is the same for all small municipalities: it’s easy to find candidates to form a list, but what’s always missing is a candidate for mayor. There are too many responsibilities, and there’s a risk of having almost no private life if one continues to work as well. The salary for the mayor of a small town barely exceeds 1,200 euros, with no contributions for pension purposes, making it impossible to maintain a full-time job. Paolo Frena, the mayor of Colle Santa Lucia, also has extensive experience as an administrator, mayor, and deputy mayor. "We are evaluating with my team what to do; we will decide together in a few months. It would be important for a young person to run; there are some in my team, the deputy mayor who has been with me for two terms is 35 years old." Like Belfi, Frena welcomed the extension of almost a year in his mandate because there are important projects underway in their municipalities that the current administrators would like to complete. Stefano Da Zanche, mayor of Gosaldo, is in his first term and is postponing any decision until the autumn: "I haven’t yet thought about re-candidacy, we will talk about it with my team in the autumn. One or two people should not run again due to work commitments, but the team is there. As for the mayoral candidate, we still need to evaluate that." Paolo Simonetti, the mayor of Zoppè, is also in his first term, dealing with urgent matters rather than thinking about the future. "There’s a need for a turnover of young people, if I run again, I’ll be close to 80," he explains. "It would be nice if a young person ran, also to ensure continuity in the administration. But at the moment, I don’t see any turnover on the horizon." Currently, two other municipalities in Belluno are without a mayor after the recent passing of their mayors. In San Nicolò Comelico, Giancarlo Ianese, 82 years old, who had been elected eight times, passed away last August. For now, the deputy mayor, Davide De Rigo Cromaro, is in charge. Another case is Sospirolo, where Mario De Bon passed away on November 4, 2024, at the age of 55, and the municipality is currently led by deputy mayor Livia Cadore. By rule, the affected municipalities will go to the polls on the first available date, meaning the next spring.

    "With you, I will depart / On ships across the seas / Which, I know / No, no, they no longer exist / It's time to say goodbye." Departures. Ships crossing seas. Moments of farewell. The famous lines of the song by Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman could serve as a perfect manifesto for the typically Italian way of going around the world. And it's no coincidence that this song is the most loved Italian song worldwide. This is confirmed by the results of a survey conducted by the Società Dante Alighieri on "Ambassadors of Italy through Songs." The research was curated by Fabio Caon, a professor at the University Ca' Foscari of Venice, and director of the intercultural communication and didactics laboratory LABCOM, as well as a member of the Scientific Committee of "Dante." The analysis, now in its second edition after a previous 2018 study, was created to identify the most listened-to Italian songs and the most popular Italian singers abroad. "Italian song," explains the Society, "is one of the main elements of Italy’s cultural and linguistic promotion worldwide and one of the main national symbols, as demonstrated by the spread of the Italian language in classical music and the demand for linguistic training from opera singers around the world." To move the project forward and understand which songs are most listened to, both in schools or Italian courses, and outside of the educational environment, the research team created a questionnaire addressed to Italian teachers and students. The data from the first phase of the survey (concluded on February 10) come from the responses of one hundred and ninety teachers from forty-two countries, including Cameroon, Bulgaria, China, the United Arab Emirates, India, and Peru. "Con te partirò" (Time to Say Goodbye) came out at number one, followed by "Nel blu dipinto di blu" by Domenico Modugno and "Azzurro" by Adriano Celentano. Other songs favored by international audiences include "L'italiano" by Toto Cutugno, "Felicità" by Albano and Romina, "Un'estate italiana" (Notti magiche) by Gianna Nannini, "La solitudine" by Laura Pausini, "O sole mio," and "Sarà perché ti amo" by Ricchi e poveri. "Interestingly," notes the “Dante” society, "the role of Sanremo in the diffusion of Italian songs worldwide." Examples of this include songs like "Grande amore" (Il Volo, winner of the Festival in 2015), "Soldi" (Mahmood, winner of Sanremo in 2019), and "Zitti e buoni" (Måneskin, winner in 2021). Other famous singers abroad include Eros Ramazzotti, Jovanotti, Annalisa, and the group The Kolors. Some phenomena are also linked to the following established on social media, or the use of songs in popular TV series or some remixes (alternative versions of a song). Included in this category are “Pedro” by Raffaella Carrà (in the Jaxomy & Agatino Romero Remix), “Con te partirò,” used in the South Korean series "Squid Game 2," very popular on Netflix (whose soundtrack also features "Nessun dorma," from Puccini's Turandot), and "Bella ciao," featured in the Spanish TV series "La casa di carta," also distributed on Netflix. Speaking of television, in Brazil, Gianluca Grignani's song "La mia storia tra le dita" is very well known for being the theme song of a telenovela. One last aspect highlighted by the first results of the research concerns our songwriters, "still very little represented" worldwide. The research continues, and after the project's actual conclusion, "the most chosen songs, the most beloved, and the most interesting from a linguistic perspective among those suggested by the teachers will be made available to teachers in the form of educational sheets, with activities aimed at learning the Italian language." The sheets will also be available on the website www.dante.global and on the Society's social media channels, as well as on those of curator Fabio Caon.
