הַצֶּמַח צֶדֶק סִפֵּר לִבְנוֹ אַאַזְמוּ"ר

The Tzemach Tzedek told his son, my revered grandfather, the Rebbe [Maharash],

אֲשֶׁר הַדְּרוּשׁ וּמַרְאֵיהֶם וּמַעֲשֵׂיהֶם — תּוֹרָה אוֹר פָּרָשַׁת יִתְרוֹ

that the maamar entitled U’Mareihem U’Maaseihem — which appears in [the Alter Rebbe’s] Torah Or, Parshas Yisro —

הוּא דְּרוּשׁ הָרִאשׁוֹן שֶׁאָמַר הָרַב הַמַּגִּיד מִמֶּעזרִיטשׁ

was the first maamar that the Maggid of Mezritch delivered

בְּשַׁעַת קַבְּלוֹ אֶת הַנְּשִׂיאוּת — חַג הַשָּׁבוּעוֹת תקכ"א

when he accepted the leadership [of the chassidic brotherhood] on Shavuos, 5521 [1761].

כְּפִי אֲשֶׁר שְׁמָעוֹ רַבֵּנוּ הַזָּקֵן מִפִּי הָרַב מְנַחֵם מעֶנְדל מֵהָארָאדָאק — בַּעַל פְּרִי הָאָרֶץ

It was relayed to the Alter Rebbe by R. Menachem Mendel of Horodok, the author of Pri HaAretz,

שֶׁהָיָה בְּאוֹתוֹ מַעֲמָד

who was present when the maamar was first delivered,

רַק שֶׁרַבֵּנוּ בֵּאֵר הַדְּרוּשׁ עַל פִּי סִגְנוֹנוֹ

although the Alter Rebbe explained the maamar according to his own style.

עוֹמְדִין בְּעֵת קְרִיאַת הַשִּׁירָה

It is customary to stand while the Song of the Sea is read [in the synagogue on Shabbos Parshas Beshalach].

הפטורה: וּדְבוֹרָה אִשָּׁה נְבִיאָה

The haftarah [for Parshas Beshalach] begins U’Devorah ishah neviah (Shoftim 4:4-24 and 5:1-31).

עֶס אִיז אַ מִנְהָג צוּ עֶסן שׁוואַרצֶע קאַשֶׁע

It is customary to eat buckwheat [on this day].

שַׁבָּת בְּשַׁלַּח שְׁנַת תרכ"א אָמַר הַצֶּמַח צֶדֶק הַמַּאֲמָר רְאוּ כִּי ה' הַנִּדְפָּס בִּלְקוּטֵי תּוֹרָה

On Shabbos Parshas Beshalach, 5621 [1861], the Tzemach Tzedek delivered the maamar entitled Re’u Ki Havayah, which appears in Likkutei Torah.

וְסִפֵּר אֲחַר כַּךְ לִבְנוֹ אַאַזְמוּ"ר

He later told his son, my revered grandfather, the Rebbe [Maharash]:

שַׁבָּת בְּשַׁלַּח שְׁנַת תקס"ה אָמַר אַאַזְמוּ"ר זֶה הַמַּאֲמָר

On Shabbos Parshas BeShalach, 5565 [1805], my revered grandfather, the [Alter] Rebbe, delivered this maamar

אֲחַר כַּךְ קָרָא אוֹתִי וְסִפֵּר לִי

and called me and told me

אֲשֶׁר בִּשְׁנַת תקכ"ט בִּהְיוֹתוֹ בְּמֶעזְרִיטשׁ, קָרָא אוֹתוֹ הָרַב הַמַּגִּיד לְחַדְרוֹ וְאָמַר לוֹ

that in the year 5529 [1769], while he was [studying] in Mezritch, the Maggid called him to his room and told him:

שַׁבָּת בְּשַׁלַּח שְׁנַת תקט"ז אָמַר הַבַּעַל שֵׁם טוֹב מַאֲמָר

“On Shabbos Parshas BeShalach, 5516 [1756], the Baal Shem Tov delivered a maamar

עַל פָּסוּק וַיָּשָׁב הַיָּם לִפְנוֹת בּוֹקֶר לְאֵיתָנוֹ, לִתְנָאוֹ, כְּמַאֲמַר רַבּוֹתֵינוּ ז"ל

on the verse, ‘And before dawn, the sea returned to its original strength,’ the last phrase of which our Sages interpret as meaning, ‘according to its stipulation.’

בִּשְׁנַת תקכ"א (שָׁנָה אַחֲרֵי הִסְתַּלְּקוּת הַבַּעַל שֵׁם טוֹב)

הָיָה אֶצְלִי — הִמְשִׁיךְ דְּבָרָיו הָרַב הַמַּגִּיד — רַבִּי (הַבַּעַל שֵׁם טוֹב)

וְאָמַר הַמַּאֲמָר וְהוֹסִיף בֵּאוּר בְּעִנְיַן עוֹשִׂין רְצוֹנוֹ — וְלֹא דְבָרוֹ — שֶׁל מָקוֹם

וְהַיּוֹם הָיָה אֶצְלִי מוֹרִי לַחֲזוֹר הַמַּאֲמָר

וְאָמַר הָרַב הַמַּגִּיד הַמַּאֲמָר לִפְנֵי אַדְמוּ"ר הַזָּקֵן

וְהוֹסִיף בֵּאוּר בְּעִנְיַן גִּנַאי נַהֲרָא שֶׁזֶּהוּ כְּעִנְיַן קְרִיעַת יַם סוּף

אַאַמוּ"ר אָמַר

My revered father, the Rebbe [Rashab], once said:

צְוִוישׁעֶן קעֶלט אוּן כְּפִירָה אִיז גאָר אַ דִינעֶ מְחִיצָה

“Only a very fine line separates spiritual frigidity from an actual denial of G‑d.

עֶס שְׁטעֶהט כִּי ה' אֱלֹקֶיךָ אֵשׁ אוֹכְלָה הוּא

It is written, ‘G‑d your L‑rd is a consuming fire.’

אֱלֹקוּת אִיז פְלאַם פַייעֶר

Divinity is a flaming fire.

לעֶרנעֶן אוּן דאַוועֶנעֶן בֶּעדאַרף מעֶן מִיט הִתְלַהֲבוּת הַלֵּב

One’s Torah study and prayer ought to be fired by an ardent heart,

אַז כָּל עַצְמוֹתַי תֹּאמַרְנָה דִי דִּבְרֵי ה' אִין תּוֹרָה וּתְפִלָּה

so that ‘all of my limbs will proclaim’ the words of G‑d in Torah study and in prayer.”
