  • All Saints, Christmas and Easter according to RS & Everyone Else Burns
    2024/11/01

This week we discuss All Saints the Christian festival not the 90s band. We reflect on how ordinary people can be saints as well as the famous people.

Dave continues with his resit of GCSE RS, this week we review the Christmas and Easter section, there wasn't much there really as both festivals were covered on literally one page. The only real thing to complain about was that Christians don't really like the fun parts of the festival. Perhaps Oliver Cromwell wrote this part.

Finally we talk about the Channel 4 show Everyone Else Burns, we had our first proper argument about this.

The RS question starts around 21 min. The TV show part starts at 51 min.

If you would like to buy the merch we have hoodies, mugs and T-Shirts with our logo on: email hywel@yateparish.org.uk for more details.

  • Alfred the Great, Prayer and Pilgrimage according to RS & Threads
    2024/10/25

This week we discuss Alfred the Great. We reflect on how it was that his reforms based on a Christian understanding of Law and Kingship, laid the foundations of our whole society.

Dave continues with his resit of GCSE RS, this week we review the prayer and pilgrimage section, it wasn't that bad but there wasn't much on anything really. Except a reminder that the Catholics do strange things like apparently "pray to Mary". Perhaps the hard line protestants have taken over from the Humanists this week.

Finally we talk about the BBC show Threads from 1984. This is truly horrifying on every level, a tough watch. It depicts a family caught up in the buildup to an all out nuclear war. Then the bomb drops and it get really dark. Hywel said that he believed that God wouldn't let this happen, Dave wasn't so sure.

The RS question starts around 19 min. The TV show part starts at 49 min.

If you would like to buy the merch we have hoodies, mugs and T-Shirts with our logo on: email hywel@yateparish.org.uk for more details.

  • Teresa of Avila, Sacraments according to RS & The Nightsleeper
    2024/10/18

This week we discuss Teresa of Avila who was a 16th Century Spanish mystic. We reflect on how improving her prayer life spurred her on to take positive action in the world. She wrote the famous prayer Christ has no hands but ours no feet but ours.

If you thought the RS curriculum hit a new low last week, this week we review the Sacraments section, to be fair it was far more accurate than what we have looked at before. The only complaint was it was not very keen on Catholics in tone or accuracy.

Finally we talk about the BBC show The Nightsleeper. Hywel thought it would be another boring Dave crime drama but it turned out to be ok. We discuss how we are dependant on tech in our lives and take everything for granted.

The RS question starts around 21 min. The TV show part starts at 57 min.

If you would like to buy the merch we have hoodies, mugs and T-Shirts with our logo on: email hywel@yateparish.org.uk for more details.

  • Edith Cavel, Jesus and Salvation according to RS & His Three Daughters
    2024/10/11

This week we discuss Edith Cavel who was a nurse in the first world war who treated soldiers from both side. We reflect on just war and how almost no wars are just and how Edith was shot for showing compassion to those her country was fighting.

If you thought the RS curriculum hit a new low last week this week we review "Jesus and Salvation", to be fair it was just very confused and strange at times. It focused as always on the more hard line versions of Christianity and some very odd Biblical quotes.

Finally we talk about the Netflix show His Three Daughters. We both likes the TV this week as it was a very positive depiction of death and dying. Very good watch is a bit heavy at times.

The RS question starts around 20 min. The TV show part starts at 53 min.

If you would like to buy the merch we have hoodies, mugs and T-Shirts with our logo on: email hywel@yateparish.org.uk for more details.

  • William Tynedale, The Afterlife according to RS & Nobody Wants This
    2024/10/04

This week we discuss William Tyndale who was burnt at the stake for translating the Bible into English. We reflect on how the powerful always want to keep knowledge to themselves.

If you thought the RS curriculum couldn't get much worse this week we review their teaching on the afterlife. Surprisingly it's just as inaccurate as the rest of it; focusing on how Christians are all terrified of Hell and how priests are out to control you with the threat of it, so watch out for those scary vicar blokes. Meanwhile the resurrection is dismissed with a incredibly articulate take down of, 'it was made up'. Surprisingly the Qu'ran wasn't dismissed as made up, I wonder why?

Finally we talk about the Netflix romance show Nobody Wants This, Hywel agreed he didn't want that romance show YUK.

The Afterlife question starts around 26 min. The TV show part starts at 60 min.

  • St Michael & Angels, Suffering according to Jesus & Catastrophe
    2024/09/27

This week we discuss St Michael the Archangel and his fight against evil, and whether images of violence can be used in a loving way.

In response to the horrendously inaccurate depiction of a Christian response to suffering from the RS curriculum, we give a Christian response to suffering.

Finally we talk about the hilarious show Catastrophe, where two people who live for pleasure are driven to suffer and end up loving each other.

The Suffering question starts around 30 min. The TV show part starts at 55 min.

    2024/09/20

This week we discuss St Matthew the tax collector who is called by Jesus and what this says about the character of God.

In 1994 Dave Failed his Religious Studies GCSE he got an E. We begin a new series where we go through the AQA Religious Studies GCSE Guide. Dave is trying to learn what RS think Christians believe. Today Dave is learning about Evil and Suffering and why it shows God is BAD not very subtly. We both failed as we don’t believe what RS says we do.

Finally, we discuss the Netflix survival show Outlast, where the first thing they do is make up rules to survive.

The Bible question start around 24 min. The TV show part starts at 57 min.
