This week, we watched the movie that claims to have brought the romcoms back from extinction: Anyone But You. However, we (dis)respectfully disagree. Starring our beloved Glen Powell, the beautiful Sydney Sweeney, and a silly goofy supporting cast whose sole job it was to bring the camp. This modern adaptation, based on William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, has everything we usually love: hot people, fake dating, and high jinks but misses the mark in certain ways that left us wanting more of something else. This week, we delved into one of our favourite worlds: The Jane Austen Cinematic Universe and we watched Love & Friendship. An odd choice for sure, but we took a gamble and Jane Austen had never steered us wrong before. This 2016 film has almost none of the traditional markers we love from a Jane Austen adaptation: nasty, manipulative women, buffoonish men, and throuples. It was definitely the wildest of rides.
